In the footsteps of Holden Caulfield - the movies
Stephen Arnell
Broadcast/Streaming Consultant for TV & Film, Writer/Producer (Bob Fosse, Alex Cox, Prince, Sinatra etc), Media/Culture Commentator (BBC Radio, magazines, newspapers), author (novel The Great One published November 2022)
80 years ago, J.D. Salinger's "I'm Crazy", his first published piece to feature the character Holden Caulfield, was printed in the December 22, 1945 issue of Collier's magazine. No-one has yet 'officially' adapted The Catcher in the Rye for TV or film, due to Salinger's intense dislike of both mediums and legal sanctions by his estate since the author's death in 2010.
Of course, audiobooks of the novel are available:
Only 1949's critically slated movie of Salinger's sad short story "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut" was released with his then agreement; renamed My Foolish Heart. Such was the travesty made of his tale that Salinger refused any other film adaptations of his work.
MY FOOLISH HEART (1949)
And a number of movies are either directly or indirectly inspired by the character, who famously hated 'phonies', movies and 'rubbernecking'. What would Caulfield made of Trump, one wonders? Probably make him puke, I'd imagine.
“If there's one thing I hate, it's the movies. Don't even mention them to me”.
“I can understand somebody going to the movies because there’s nothing else to do, but when somebody really wants to go, and even walks fast so as to get there quicker, then it depresses hell out of me. Especially if I see millions of people standing in one of those long, terrible lines, all the way down the block, waiting with this terrific patience for seats and all.”
