Football for Peace

21st September 2023: International Day of Peace

Yesterday I had the immense privilege to speak on a live broadcast on behalf of the Street Soccer Foundation in support of Peace Day.

For such an opportunity, I thank the most inspiring, warm, energising force of nature that is Jeremy Gilley MBE . What you do Jeremy is awe-inspiring and I am forever a supporter of yours and all the work you do. You are simply amazing.

Joining me on our esteemed panel was Troy Townsend MBE of Kick It Out , and Marcus Gayle and Hannah Barnett , on behalf of Brentford Football Club and Brentford FC Community Sports Trust .

We came together to speak on the subject of football for peace - in how the sport can be used to promote positive social change and inclusion - and of course, peace.

In England alone, football participation contributes to more than £10 billion to society each year.

It is also the global no.1 sport - being the most watched by those who watch any sport; and the most played by those who participate in any sport.

Sport in general is simply amazing. It brings people together in a way little else can. From make-or-break professional events to the most casual amateur fans, the fun and passion associated with sport make it a key part of what it means to be human.

Football in particular though, holds immense potential to transcend cultural, social, and political boundaries, serving as a powerful tool for promoting peace, unity, and inclusivity.

It was a rich discussion yesterday - hosted fantastically by our very own COO & Head of Community Kay Skelton .

Here are just a few key points to consider:

1. Football United: Football has a unique ability to bring diverse individuals together, regardless of their backgrounds, beliefs, or nationality. It fosters a sense of belonging and shared experience, promoting understanding and empathy among fans and players alike. By supporting their favourite teams, fans can find common ground and build bridges across societal divides.

2. Breaking down barriers: Football has the power to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes. It provides a platform for individuals from different walks of life to showcase their skills, regardless of their gender, race, or socio-economic background. By celebrating diversity within the sport, football can inspire communities to embrace inclusivity and reject discrimination.

3. Promoting social integration: Football can play a vital role in promoting social integration and empowering marginalized communities. Football clubs and their Club Community Organisations (CCOs) can implement programs that use the sport as a medium for social change, fostering positive values such as teamwork, respect, and fair play. These initiatives can help address social issues, such as poverty, inequality, and youth empowerment. ** Case in point - our own nationally acclaimed Street Soccer Academy programme which works in partnership with several clubs and CCOs up and down the country to effect positive social change through the power of football. See our website for further details: www.streetsoccerfoundation.org.uk.?

4. Inspiring positive role models: Footballers today have a global influence and popularity, and can serve as powerful role models for millions of fans worldwide. Through their actions on and off the field, these individuals can promote messages of peace, tolerance, and social responsibility. Their commitment to charitable causes and advocacy can also inspire fans to make a positive difference in their own communities.

5. Encouraging dialogue and diplomacy: Football provides a neutral ground where individuals and nations can engage in healthy competition and dialogue. International tournaments and friendly matches allow countries to come together, fostering diplomatic relations and cultural exchange. Football can be a catalyst for peace talks and conflict resolution, emphasizing the importance of dialogue over violence.

To harness the full potential of football for positive social change and inclusion, it is essential for fans, players, clubs, and governing bodies to actively promote values of respect, equality, and fairness.

By embracing these principles, football communities worldwide can contribute to a more peaceful and inclusive society, both on and off the pitch.
