Supporting local students in the community

Supporting Business Studies Students at Leehurst Swan School

One aspect of our corporate responsibility at Total Foot Health is to support education. So far this year we have been able to support business studies students in both Sarum Academy and Leehurst Swann School. The weekly bulletin for Leehurst Swann School produced the write-up below for their newsletter.

“Business Studies Guest Speaker Mr Graham Simpson, from a local business, Total Foot Health, came into school to give a talk to the Year 10 GCSE Business Studies on “How Technology Influences Business Activity”. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to hear first-hand experience of how a business used technology, the need for data protection and GDPR compliance.

The talk covered firewalls and security, data analysis, accounts, marketing and functionality, ease of use and costs, and the benefits of online bookings. The students listened well and asked many astute questions which lead to further discussions on external influences and managing change.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Simpson for delivering such a professional presentation that covered many points of our current topic.”

We hope that throughout the year we will be able to support other schools within the Salisbury area.

Swift microwave technology is six years old

It has now ben six years since Swift Microwave technology was launched. During this time ‘around 100,000 Swift treatments have been undertaken in the UK’ (Foot.Expert Ivan Bristow). These patients have benefited significantly. They have avoided:

  • Cryotherapy burns
  • Painful freezing processes
  • Freezer burn blisters and uncomfortable dressings.

Instead, after each Swift Microwave Technology treatment, patients have been able to carry on as normal whilst the treatment takes effect. But how successful is this treatment and how do we know?

How Successful is the Treatment?

Six years on research has been conducted to find out just how successful Swift Microwave Technology really is. Out of 6998 adult patients included within the research, the success rate was found to be:

  • Swift Microwave Technology: around 80% (Foot.Expert Ivan Bristow)
  • Salicylic acid, 31%
  • Chryotherapy, 34% (Data from the BMJ)

When reviewing this data, it is clear just how effective Swift Microwave Technology really is when treating verrucae.

Heel Pain or Plantar Fasciitis

No alt text provided for this image

Do you dread getting out of bed in the morning?

Do you have unbearable pain when you first stand up?

If this is you, then read on ….

 What Is it?

Heel pain is a very common cause of trouble to the general population. It has been estimated that 10% of us will suffer this condition, often called plantar fasciitis, at some time in our adult life. The condition is caused by thickening of a ligament like structure in the arch of the foot. The pain can be quite debilitating and tiring and can force us to adjust our walking that will often have a knock-on effect on the rest of our lower limb.

The plantar fascia itself is a tendon like band that goes underneath the foot, supporting the structure of the foot, giving you a little spring back when you walk and also protecting the soft tissues deeper in the foot. As you walk, this area can become more and more irritated and the tissue can become thickened and inflamed.

What causes it?

The root cause of heel pain is often due to tightness in the surrounding muscles and tendons so the first port of call is always to help the area stretch, which can often ease the pain. However, in some cases simple stretching just will not work, we need to stimulate a healing response from tissues that have become chronically injured. This is where Shockwave Therapy can help.

How does Shockwave Therapy work?

The treatment works by sending a low energy shockwave through an applicator to the injured tissue helping to improve blood circulation, relieve pain and stimulate healing by causing rapid vibrations of the soft tissue at a cellular level. The treatment itself lasts a few minutes and does not require any anaesthesia or time away from normal activities.

Most patients find considerable relief from pain even after the first treatment. Optimum results have been produced with a three week course of CONSECUTIVE treatments in combination with continued exercises and other conservative measures.

Even after the treatment sessions have finished the area continues to heal and improve over time.

Heel Balm

What is this?

Heel balm is a moisturising cream, or emollient, which has 25% urea as its active ingredient.

Why do we use it?

The skin is a very important barrier- it keeps in moisture, helps us to cool down when we are hot and it also stops infection getting into our body.

When it gets dry, it is not able to function as a barrier as effectively. This is very important in foot health because dry skin around the heels can easily fissure or split, which can be sore but also may allow infection such as cellulitis.

The skin contains urea naturally. It attracts moisture and helps the cells to absorb water, so a cream which has 25% urea is a very effective way of dealing with dry skin.

Why is it called heel Balm?

The skin on the soles of the feet, and especially the heels is thicker than anywhere else on the body, so a higher concentration of urea works more effectively. It can be used all over the soles of the foot (and hands), but should not be used elsewhere on the body. 10% Urea cream can be used elsewhere.

Why do we advise using it?

Heel balm is only necessary in small amounts daily, so the feet do not feel too greasy, making us more likely to use it. It also shows results within 2-3 days and makes the feet feel so much more comfortable so compliance is good!

HAVE A HAPPY EASTER
