Yesterday, I had two sisters in my clinic coming for braces placement, I was shocked to have the mom tells me ?? Dr.Mai, shall the girls stay on fluids for couple of months after braces placement ? ??I really laughed and told her "Of course not! It is not a gastric bypass Surgery, she told me, that her sister couldn’t eat anything for months"


This is why today’s weekly article will comprehensively talk about that crucial topic, and the good news you can eat everything once you place your braces and leave my clinic, with understanding how to do it properly.. it shall be an enjoyment.


Braces are made ofdelicatecomponents. Certain foods may affect or damage them, while they are intended to endure normal wear and tear. If particles get stuck, certain foods may increase the risk of dental issues. It's only been a couple of days with the Braces, but you're beginning to embrace soft foods A sensitive mouth is often associated with new braces. It's great if you're eating normally, it'll make your sore teeth feel better. If you don't, try to eat a little soft if possible.


Here are some suggestions based on American Association of Orthodontics recommendations :


Some of preferred choices on the first week , you may want to try eating soft, gentle foods that help minimize discomfort as your teeth adjust:

  • Bananas: Nature’s soft and sweet offering.
  • Yogurt: Creamy and versatile, perfect for any time of the day.
  • Ice Cream: Cold treats are not only comforting but the cold also helps relieve some of the pressure caused by the wires.



Foods that should be handled with caution initially:

Certain foods can increase sensitivity or cause problems right after getting braces:

* Firm bread or rolls: May require more force than comfortable. Additionally, the braces may come off unexpectedly!

* Tough cuts of meat: may cause difficulty in the first few days.



Foods to avoid while wearing braces:


As you embark on your journey to a healthy smile, there are certain foods you should avoid or minimise . Anything hard, sticky, or difficult to bite into may put you at risk of your braces damage and longer treatment time. These foods can damage the brace, loosen wires, or cause other complications. Here is a list to remember:

*Hard candies: Risky to braces and teeth.

*Corn on the cob and whole apples Biting directly can loosen the stand or bend the wire.

* Sticky candies: Toffees, caramels, etc. can stubbornly stick to your braces.

* Popcorn: These corn kernels are your braces’ worst enemy.

* Nuts: Their hard nature poses an immediate risk.

* Crispy veggies/fruits: If not cooked, they can put too much pressure on them.

*Pizza Crust: Especially crispy and hard pizza crust.

* Bagels or hard rolls: Their density can be a challenge.

* Ice cream: chewing ice cream cones is a definite no-no.

*ICE: please don’t chew on ice when stressed-No Go!
