Food Safety in Africa Platform Launch

Foodborne diseases (FBD) are a major concern in Africa, with the World Health Organization (WHO) estimating that they cause approximately 137,000 deaths and 91 million cases of acute illnesses annually, the highest rates globally. The economic repercussions are equally severe, with the World Bank reporting that unsafe food costs low- and middle-income countries around $110 billion each year in lost productivity and medical expenses. Additionally, food safety issues hinder Africa's ability to tap into lucrative international trade markets.

This is why I am so excited that today, on World Food Safety Day, we are (beta-) launching the “Food Safety for Africa” (FS4A) platform, powered by Ubuntoo.

FS4Africa is a Horizon Europe project aiming to revolutionize food safety in Africa's informal sector with cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions. By addressing critical challenges like mycotoxin contamination, pesticide residues, microbial threats, and food adulteration, we are building a safer, more resilient food system for all.
