Research indicates that there are several reasons behind heart disease such as genetics, stress, age, diabetes and others but paying attention to what we eat can make a big difference. Food is in fact a major deciding factor of our heart’s health. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH) recommends choosing heart healthy foods.

Diet comprising of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, protein rich foods like lean meats, fish such as tuna, salmon and trout, soy products and nuts and seeds helps in keeping our heart healthy. However, there are certain foods that we need to limit to keep our heart healthy such as sodium, sugar, saturated fat, dairy products, processed meats and red meats that are high in cholesterol. There are different publications presenting heart healthy eating plans and one can easily follow that to maintain a healthy heart. These plans are informative, useful and spreads awareness as well.

Understanding heart health and taking necessary actions towards it is the key to have a healthy heart. Being mindful about what we are eating is important. Cholesterol level should be low so that it does not buildup plaque in the arteries and also does not create any blockage in our heart. Risks of heart attack, stroke and blockages in the arteries increases due to high cholesterol level. Choosing foods wisely is important. The impact of food and its relation with our heart’s health thereby cannot be overlooked.
