Food Fraud Prevention Think Tank & Food Fraud Prevention Academy:

?

·??????Mission: Our work here at the Food Fraud Prevention Think Tank is focused on reducing the fraud opportunity through capacity- and capability-building. The sharing of information and education is a key foundation of this work. With increased awareness of the system vulnerabilities, the fraud opportunity can be reduced, making education a valuable weapon in your food fraud prevention arsenal. With this goal in mind, our Food Fraud Prevention Academy was established to provide free online training courses, or MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses,) to address a broad range of topics related to Food Fraud Prevention. The Food Fraud Prevention Overview MOOC has been continuously offered since 2013, and three other Food Fraud Prevention MOOCs have rounded out the core series since 2017. Additional MOOCs are developed and implemented as needs are identified. Since 2020, these courses have been moved from Michigan State University, and the redeveloped courses and system have been relocated here.

?

Summary for May 2023: ?Our outreach has expanded to include?new MOOCs and Professional Education. Each of the free Massive Open Online Courses were updated, PLUS in the last year we released two new programs: Advanced Criminology and Supply Chain Management. These eight programs include over FORTY-FIVE hours of video content. In addition, three of our Professional Education events have been scheduled back-to-back.

The Food Fraud Annual Update 2019 expanded beyond the basics of “What is food fraud?” or “How to detect fraud?” to the practical steps of “How to start?” and “How much is enough?” The focus is on the evolving compliance requirements and the latest and most effective best practices. The conference is based on our scholarly research, publications, and public engagement on the food fraud strategy and policy. The conference deliverable is a “one-stop” annual update with a gap analysis and a list of action items.

So far in 2022-23, two journal articles have been published and several more are “In Press” or in the final stages of approval. The research projects have expanded from establishing the foundation – defining the basic concepts and the methods – to expanded application or further refinement of the processes. Specifically, we have expanded our primer document series since these can be quickly published and very clearly address very specific questions.

With the recent artificial intelligence buzz, it’s interesting to review previous publications such as our survey of Food Fraud Data Collection Needs, which helps frame the collection, management and processing of new information such as incident reviews.
