Following the Voice of God in Your Writing with Kellie Frazier

Are you following God’s voice in your writing? How do you know if it’s God’s voice or your own desire? How do we hear God’s voice?

In today’s episode, Kellie Frazier shares with us her incredible story of hearing God’s voice, trusting in Him and seeing her faith unfold right before her eyes. This is going to bless you.

The Faith-Based Author

Shelley: Today I’m rolling out the red carpet, and I’m inviting you to join me in this expert interview with Kellie Frazier. Welcome, Kellie.

Kellie: Thank you! So happy to be here.

Shelley: Yeah, Kellie and I became fast friends. I was like, “Oh, I really want to have her on my podcast, and introduce all of you to her.”

So, let me share a little bit about Kellie. I know she’s going to have a lot of great information to share with you on the podcast.

Kellie Frazier is the founder of Connecting LLC. The creator of the series Start Your Faith Based Business where you’ll hear how leaders and entrepreneurs took their love for God and serving others and turned it into a successful faith-based business. Her website is www.YourFaithBasedBusiness.com.

So, welcome Kellie. I’m so excited to have you.

Kellie: Thank you. I think this is awesome what you’re doing. For sure, many authors need to have podcasts like this.

Shelley: Yeah, I think it’s so easy to consume a podcast. You can listen to it when you’re on the go or when you’re exercising. Sometimes I’ve done it when I’m cleaning or doing something else. It’s so great to get that encouragement and the information that we really need in such a portable format.

You are an author and also a coach. You help people build their businesses. But tell us a little bit about how your journey started publishing books.

Hearing the Voice of God the First Time

Kellie: Oh my. Well, the first book that I ever published actually came in a dream. I was in Hawaii. It was four o’clock in the morning, I saw this image of the book cover. It didn’t make any sense to me. Then, I saw three chapters that were written in it.

I realized it was a small book. Every single chapter that was written I kept hearing, “Stop judging, stop judging, stop judging.” That was fascinating to me.

So, when I got up. I mentioned to my business partner at that time “It’s so strange, I dreamed I had written this book. I saw the cover and all this stuff.” She goes, “Well, sounds to me like you need to write a book.”

On the flight home from Hawaii to Michigan where we lived, it took me 14 hours to get home. By that time, the entire book was already written.

Shelley: Wow!

Kellie: That was my first book. Actually, that’s the book right there. Connecting Hope, Faith, and Love became my first book. That’s how I entered the author world.

Shelley: Yeah and I love that. It was birthed out of a dream from God, birthed out of Him. You took the time you had on the plane, the ideas, and it became a book.

Sometimes, I think we make it harder than it needs to be. In that, we see this big thing of “Oh, but it’s a book.”

Tell us a little bit, about how has your books helped your coaching business and vice versa? What is the synergy you’ve seen with your books?

Books Can Change Lives

Kellie: That’s a great question. I think primarily, the books I have done have all come from these moments with God. Because I have not really said, “I’m going to be an author.” This was just something that was birthed out of this relationship that I have with the Lord.

The more I gave over my willingness to do it. Whatever God called me to do, the more books came out of me. And I found that they were so helpful to people.

Shelley, you and I were talking earlier about how you hear from people all around the world about how their relationship with God has just blossomed because of the book they read. How it blossomed from the books that you had written, and that’s what happened.

I’ve started to notice that there was a consecutive consensus. People were truly being transformed by reading books. I know that it wasn’t because of what Kellie Frazier put in there. It was because of what God the Father put in the book. I just had to sit back and say, “OK, Lord, wherever you want this to go, I’m willing to go there.”

Again, you and I talked about being willing to let it flow. For every book that I’ve written has lead people into something else. It’s either into working with me on a different level or opened their eyes to something that they now can move forward with.

There are all kinds of different ways. For my coaching practice specifically, I think our books are pretty much a calling card. If you know how to write a good book that leads somebody someplace else…

Here’s a great example. You write a book that has a problem and you solve it. But in the midst of that book, you create another problem that you need to have that solvable at the end of that book.

Therefore, people come to look for you and say, “OK, at the end of the book I noticed that there was another issue and I’m struggling with that.” That’s what the book did. It gave them that insight.

They say, “OK, I’m kind of struggling with that myself, so how do I fix it?” Therefore, they come and look for you. That is one way.

I think the whole book process has really allowed people to come to me through coaching that I never anticipated. But it was the whole process of, “here’s a problem, here’s a solution, here’s another problem. I can’t give you all of that right now. If you come to the coaching you can understand how to resolve all of that.” I think it definitely is more of a calling card.

Shelley: Yeah, and that’s good. Because whether it’s a free gift on your email lister, lead magnet, a training, webinar, or something, I always say “what is the problem you are solving? How can you take them to the next step with the thing you have to offer next?”

One thing I talk to writers and authors about is diversifying their income not only books. But with digital products and online programs as well. Taking that same content from the book and making it into a program.

You were telling me about how God kind of took you into a process of teaching. How you wrote your books and published them. Share a little bit about that.

The Still Small Voice Inside

Kellie: Yeah, this is kind of a wild story. Whenever I tell it, they’re either fascinated or looking at themselves going, “I would never have done that.”

What happened was, we were moving our daughter who had gone to the school Hallmark. I don’t know if people are familiar with the school of Hallmark. But it’s a professional photography school up in Massachusetts. And we lived down South.

It took 17 hours to get there and drop her off. Then after schooling was over, we were moving her back down South. It took 17 hours to drive home.

When we get into the driveway, it’s already 11 o’clock at night. I heard I was to set up my studio. When I say I heard that, it was this voice inside that says to go set up my studio. I was like, “I’m so tired. I just drove 17 hours.”

Sometimes, I do find myself arguing with that still small voice. I got inside the house. We were all getting ready to go to bed.

Literally, I was telling Shelley, I just looked gnarly ok? I just felt awful. But I heard the Lord say again, “set up your studio.”

Shelley: This is your video studio, right?

Kellie: Correct. I started setting up the lights and the camera. My husband is looking at me like, “what are you doing?” “I know this seems crazy,” I said. “But I’m supposed to be recording right now. I just don’t know what yet.”

Then, I sat on the edge of my couch and waited. I’m like “OK Lord, I obeyed you. Here’s the studio. What do you want me to do?”

That’s when I heard to create this beginning publishing of books for people. To help them understand how to get their message out. I was like, “really? I don’t even have the energy right now to do this. But, OK, if that’s what you really want me to do.”

When I stood up, I can not tell you the information that came pouring out of me. Information that I don’t even know. I wasn’t even aware that I knew the information. It was unbelievable.

By the way, it took 2 days. All I did was lay on the couch when I got exhausted. My daughter brought me a couple of things to eat and that was primarily what I did.

Let me tell you, I am the scariest looking I think I’ve ever been on this program. But those who take it, absolutely love it. So praise God for that, right?

How to Follow the Voice of God

Shelley: Right. I feel like there’s this theme for you, following the voice of God. The promptings of God have led to these things that are impacting lives and bringing about change. Talk to me a little bit about that.

We have writers from all different backgrounds and faiths. And different ways that they’ve been raised in the church. For those that may feel like it’s hard for them to sometimes hear those promptings, or feel it what would you say to them?

Kellie: Such a good question. There are different ways and avenues that we all hear God speak. But what we do, we start doubting it. We call it a gut feeling, an intuition, our sixth sense, and all kinds of things except the Voice of God or the Holy Spirit.

This is what I learned a long time ago. I’ll share this story very briefly.

In the year 2007, I had lost my nephew to drowning. His mom was my little sister. I lost her too of cancer.

I was traveling between Michigan and Vermont where they lived. That I could try to go through her cancer, help her and then through the funerals.

Then, when I traveled back home. My husband had tried to handle everything.

I had started up an investment company to help our sons learn a skill of rehabbing homes and that kind of thing. He was trying to handle all that by himself. But when I got home he was like, “I’m done, I want that business shut down.”

Here I’m thinking, “OK, I’ve lost my nephew. I’ve lost my sister. Now, I’ve lost my business because he didn’t want anything more to do with it. I could lose my marriage if I’m not careful.”

It all took place in a year. At the end of 2007, I ended up with a traumatic brain injury from a minor accident that I had.

My youngest was 11 years old. She took such good care of me. Because some days I’d be a 2-year-old. Other days I’d have 9 or 10 seizures. Sometimes I was paralyzed on my right side.

Six months after that accident, I remembered three words that had come flying out of my mouth that I promise you I did not say. As if I was flying through the air. I remembered the three words, “Jesus save me.”

Then, boom, that’s when I hit. My brain had moved to the forward and to the right. I’m laying there. I remembered all of this at that moment. I’m watching her walk out the door and feeling this anguish inside. Because my body was in pain all the time. This was no life for that little girl.

I remember saying, “God, I know you can heal me. I don’t know why you haven’t. But I know you can. If this is what it’s going to be like tomorrow morning when I wake up and I’m thinking of her, I don’t want to wake up.”

I wasn’t depressed nor suicidal. I didn’t want her life to be like this. Because this had been six months already. She had no friends and nothing going on right.

Attitude of Gratitude

The next morning, I did wake up to a light in my room. That was the most incredible peace, joy, love, and unity. Those words don’t even touch it. Not even come close to it. But when I sat up, there was no pain anywhere in my body. That was when I had this attitude of being grateful.

You talk about the attitude of gratitude. Again, like those three words pouring out of me. I had no idea that all of this gratitude would come out of my mouth. But that’s what happened.

I have no idea how long I sat there. It could have been 2 minutes, 2 hours, I don’t know. But all of this gratitude starts pouring out of me.

I remember, this tiny little pencil sitting on my nightstand. When I paused for a moment, I picked up the pencil. It was like, “I’m even grateful for this weird little pencil.” I remember saying that.

That was when I saw these visions start to come. There were three of them. They came just like this [clicking fingers].

The first one, I saw myself as an author. I’d written tons of books. I was handing them to people.

The second one, I was a speaker on this massive stage with thousands of people whose lives were transformed. The third one, I saw myself helping people from all around the world.

That was in 2008. Now I’ve written 10 books. I have a school in Uganda called Kellie Frazier school. There are so many different things that I could go on and on about that only God could have done.

To listen to the voice inside for me is not difficult. Because when I said the question after seeing those visions, I went. “How is any of that supposed to happen?” I heard inside two words that were almost audible. It was, “trust me.”

I sat there going, “who wouldn’t?” Right? “In this moment, who wouldn’t? Of course, I’ll trust you!” I said OK, and that was my vow to God. I would listen to his voice from that point forward and there you have it.

Believe God’s Voice

Shelley: Wow that is powerful. Do you share that in one of your books?

Kellie: I do. Actually, the next book that’s coming out has the entire story. It’s very powerful.

Shelley: Yeah, so powerful. I just want to encourage all of you listening to be encouraged and be inspired by Kellie.

We serve a limitless God. There are no obstacles that are too big for Him. No mountain too big. You heard what she went through and the traumatic brain injury.

My dad had a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma for almost 8 weeks. I know about that, it’s not something to take lightly. Yet I would have never guessed seeing you today that you had any problem. But, look what God has done. By following His leading, His voice, and His promptings.

I want to encourage all of you. Like Kellie said, not to dismiss it away or think of it as something else. But to start pressing in and recognizing. “OK, that’s a prompting from God,” Believing it, not doubting, and watching what God will do when you take those brave steps.

I know, Kellie and I have those testimonies of taking those brave steps. Where we didn’t feel like we were qualified or able to do what God had called us to do. And He did it. It’s a powerful testimony.

As we start closing this interview, what is one little take action tip that you would leave our listeners with today?

Kellie: Well, I would say that if you know that writing is your gift. Spend some time in meditation. Here is one thing that I teach all of my clients, including my authors. Sit and take a deep breath.

When my sister died, I was laying on my bed bawling my eyes out. I heard the Holy Spirit saying, “why are you crying?” I was right in the middle of this deep sob like [gasp]. Then I held my breath. I was like, “well, because of my sister.” Immediately I heard, “your sister is fine.” Right?

I knew that I was crying for myself. What happened in that next moment was He taught me how to breathe. He said, “I breathed the breath of life into you. Why would you not think your breath is important?”

Because I was sobbing, it was coming out, right? He kept saying, “breathe, breathe.” I was, “but I am breathing!”

Taking that slow deep breath. Holding and then releasing the breath. It allows you to stop the constant anxiety and stress that’s going on in your head. Until you can actually do that.

Listen to your breathing instead of everything else that’s going off in your brain. You’re not going to know what direction to have. Neither understand the clarity that you need.

It does not mean that I’m perfect at it. That I know what to do all the time. No. But I can promise you, every great thing that I’ve ever done in my life has come from those moments where I have sat in the presence of God.

Let go of the world and said, “here I am, fill my hands because I know You want to. I want to know Your heart.”

When I know God’s heart, it’s easier to move forward. Whether you’re writing a book, speaking on a stage, or creating a school in Uganda, that’s what happened. In my opinion, that would be the biggest, greatest thing that anybody could ever tell you.

Shelley: That’s powerful. You know, put that to practice and see what God will do.

I recently shared in a podcast about King Hezekiah. He sought the Lord wholeheartedly, and it said, “as a result, he was successful in everything he did.” God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above what we can think or imagine. I encourage you to just breathe, surrender, and come meditate with Him as Kellie said.
