Following Jesus' Model of Servant Leadership

Following Jesus' Model of Servant Leadership

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." - Mark 10:45 (NIV)

Jesus' words in Mark 10:45 challenges the very essence of our human nature.?

The world tells us to seek personal gain above all, and this is also what our nature inclines us toward. However, Jesus' countercultural model of servant leadership turns our selfish mindset upside down.

He calls us to prioritize serving others above being served and to humbly give of ourselves for the benefit of those around us. Practicing this servant leadership will always be a challenge for us, but it can be easier when we ask the Holy Spirit to guide us in how we can approach every situation.

Perhaps one of the most challenging parts of servant leadership is found in Jesus' command to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44). He was not talking about tolerance or passive acceptance; He is telling us to actively seek the well-being of those who may oppose or mistreat us.

Jesus not only preached about servant leadership but lived it out in every aspect of His life. He washed the feet of His disciples (John 13:1-17), healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ultimately gave His life as a ransom for us.

Servant leadership has a special impact on the dynamics of family life. When we, as husbands lead our families with humility and sacrificial love, we create an environment where each member feels valued and supported, and our children learn from this example.

By modeling servant leadership in the home, we, as parents, instill in our children values founded on God’s Word and His will for our lives.
