Follower Counts Don't Matter

Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri recently posted on his personal Threads account stating that "follower count matters less than view and like counts.”
As marketers, we know that the most important metric to look for is engagement. Even with that knowledge, follower count is what a lot of people judge an account on.
Think about it: if you are looking at purchasing an item, you will naturally visit their Instagram page to see if they are reliable. If the follower count is less than impressive, you may look for a new company to purchase from.
So, if engagement is so important, why isn't the number of likes listed under the posts anymore? Even in their new Threads app, the follower count is the only metric listed on an account.
It's all about perception on social media.
While engagement is important to track when it comes to the success of your content, the follower count could make or break whether a prospect remains interested, leaving it just as important.
