Follow Your Dream

There's no silver bullet to growing your business. In our case, growth has always been a combination of organic growth, partnerships, and outright mergers.

 The key is knowing the timing of when you need to go it alone, and when it makes sense to leverage the strength of partners.

 Some years ago, we got put to that test.

 We had organically grown our business to a million dollars in annual revenue, but we were looking ahead to the next milestone.

 For us, it was how would we grow to ten million dollars annually?

 Would the one million playbook work just as well at 10X levels?

 Right around that time I had a dream. In it, an angelic figure put a paper in my hand bearing a scripture and a command to go and serve.

 We had no idea what that meant but after prayer and consultation with our pastor, we interpreted the dream to mean that we had to take serving God beyond the walls of the church and out into the community where real, hurting people were.

 We said yes to that vision, but how in the world would we accomplish it, with no instruction booklet, no experience in community outreach, a burgeoning business to scale, and only seemingly angelic direction?

 The question was answered for us when we received a prestigious business award that year. In the audience was the CEO of a larger firm that was seeking partners to build out a national footprint in order to attract major, corporate clients.

 We connected, compared business plans, and ultimately merged into one entity 3 months later. The merger answered our initial growth objective, while also allowing me to "retire" and go launch our community nonprofit agency focused on feeding, clothing, counseling, and reemploying hurting families in our community.

 The very first substantial donor to our nonprofit agency was a complete stranger who happened to be passing through town that weekend and heard the mission during our church announcements.

 He wrote a check that day, sight unseen, to our nonprofit for $10,000.00. He then sent in another $15,000.00 anonymously when he learned we needed more startup funds. Those funds gave us a huge push forward!

 Over time, our agency would obtain amazing individual, corporate, faith-based, and even governmental partners. Together, we raised millions in cash and in-kind giving. We collected and donated millions of pounds of food over almost 2 decades of service. We helped thousands of individuals and families lift their heads from despair.

 Could we have predicted any of this when we asked the simple question of how we would grow to our next level?

 No!

 It began with a dream—the kind you have when you go to sleep at night. But we heeded that dream. We didn’t make light of it. We followed it into a destiny that accommodated both our desire to grow our business and to make a lasting difference in our community.

 This was an unlikely path for sure. You won’t read about it in business school textbooks. But that is the way of the entrepreneur, my friends. It’s unscripted!

 It’s about asking tough questions like, “How will we get to our next level?” And then paying attention to the answers that come back to you. As you have seen in our case, even a dream can hold the keys to your future.
