Hey everyone!?

I figured I should probs (re)introduce myself for those of you who don’t know me. And hi again to those who do!?

I’m Rheanna Egleton - a 25-year-old copywriter from the U.K., living in Australia. I’m one of Word Tonic’s newsletter writers.?

Lemme tell you a bit about my career.?

My first job was in a chip shop when I was sixteen. I lasted for four hours before I quit.?

Then I worked in a library for two years. A book lover’s dream!

After that, I did the ‘communications’ (copywriting, they just didn’t call it that) for a community interest company for three years.?

THEN I quit that because it was destroying my mental health and my confidence was shot to shit.?

So I went freelance. Got my first gig. Fucked off to Thailand for a month.?

And finally, finally, I joined Word Tonic.?

I was a bit lost with freelancing. I was selling myself short, I was really lacking community.?

This was in April 2023.

So I upskilled. I went to masterclasses. I slowly built my confidence back up.?

And now I’m working for a digital marketing agency in Perth as their copywriter.?

All of that to say- trust the damn process but don’t forget to help yourself when you can.?

Let’s set the mood, shall we??

The lights are down low.?

Logs are crackling gently in the fireplace. There’s a light patter of rain against the window. A steaming cup of tea is next to you, its aroma mingling with the delicious scent of firewood.?

You feel cosy, relaxed.?

You pull out your favourite notebook. It’s embossed with your name.?

And your fountain pen is ready, poised, glittery purple ink ready to flow.?

Ah, the perfect setting to write.?

For hours, you scribble away, writing the most ingenious ad copy and stories and poems known to humankind.?

AND THAT’S ALL BULLSHIT

Seems abrupt. But it’s true.?

If you’re waiting for the perfect moment to write. It ain’t gonna happen.?

Sorry to burst your bubble.?

I’m writing this newsletter in the back of an Uber. I started writing it on a train to my fulltime job. I wrote some more of it waiting for another train (public transport’s a bitch, hey).

If I waited for the vibes to be right, Carolyn would fire me because you wouldn’t have a newsletter.?

Writing doesn’t need a perfect moment. We have phones. Laptops are portable. So are pens and paper. And your excuses are killing your copy. YOUR FEAR is killing it.?

Because even if it’s shit you HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE.?

Even if it’s in your notes. Even if it’s on a bit of scrap paper. Even if you never show anyone.?

Just write. And write. And write.?

I have a kinda annoying tip for your career. The kind of tip a ‘proper grown up’ would give you. Like your Nan. Or a teacher.?

I’m not any of those things (your Nan, a ‘proper grown up’, or a teacher). But I am older and wiser than I once was. And it turns out that all those Nans and teachers and grown ups were actually right. Annoying. I know.?

The advice??

Trust the process.?

Remember how I said I worked in a chip shop for a day at 16? I NEVER thought I would be working full time as a copywriter today. Mainly because I didn’t know what cooywriting was (thanks school). But also because I thought that chip shop was going to be my life forever.?

You can think you have all the knowledge in the world. You’ve done a degree. You’ve been practicing. But it still feels like you’re not really getting anywhere.?

And then one day, years from now, you’ll look back and be like “why the fuck did I write that in my cover letter, no wonder they didn’t hire me”.?

You see, some things really do just get better with practice. They start to click.?

That’s not to say you can’t get anywhere in your career without the passage of time. Of course you can! I just mean think of this as a journey. If you haven’t landed the first gig you applied for, it’s okay. You will get one.

Just keep pushing yourself. Put yourself out there.?

• Seek feedback?
