Follow the GPS: 7 Questions to Organize How You Communicate
How do you communicate with someone else? Do you organize your thoughts and check to make sure everything makes sense? Or do you hope for the best with your first draft?
It's OK, either way. Because these seven questions will help you to communicate and reveal your goal, the person you're addressing and what style to use.
Consider it your GPS for communication in English :)
GPS questions in four sections
In each section I first state a question then follow up with a template to answer it. Between the square brackets is where to insert reasons.
1. Goal
- Why is it important for you to clarify this information?
I clarify this important information because [insert why here].
2. Person you're addressing
- Who needs to know this important information?
- Why would this person care for it?
I share this information with [insert the person's name here] because [insert why that person would care here].
3. Style
- How can I be more direct with my words?
- What kind of reaction am I anticipating this person will have to this information?
- What kind of reaction would I like to elicit from this person?
Now you've got the hang of it, right!
4. And that seventh question?
You guessed it!
I'm saving it for UX Designers who show me they want it.
You can have it by booking a free 15-minute strategy session with me at your convenience :)
