FOFO: The Fear of Finding Out – Addressing AI Anxiety in Communications

When I conduct AI workshops for communications teams, I often meet professionals who recognise AI’s potential to enhance their effectiveness but feel they lack the time or space to explore it. Then there’s another group—those who firmly resist, questioning AI’s relevance and insisting they can achieve similar or even better results without it.

In a recent conversation, Jesper Andersen , a communications and AI expert from Sweden (who you should all follow), shared a thought-provoking perspective. He suggested that some people experience what he calls “FOFO”—the fear of finding out.

The Kübler-Ross Change Curve offers insight into this resistance. It outlines the emotional journey people undergo when faced with change, progressing from denial to acceptance. Integrating this understanding into an organisation’s approach can be invaluable, as it underscores that AI adoption isn’t merely about introducing new tools; it’s about guiding teams through a profound work and cultural transition. By acknowledging and supporting this journey, businesses can foster a more adaptable, resilient workforce.

"It’s crucial to recognise that within every organisation, there’s a cohort of people who either fear or feel anxious about technological advances. Some may even resist, believing they can continue to excel without adapting. Addressing these sentiments is key to creating an environment where everyone feels empowered to embrace innovation.

Breaking Through FOFO: A Structured Approach

The solution isn’t simply to implement AI and hope for the best. It requires a multi-step strategy that addresses both the emotional and technical aspects of adoption:

  1. Acknowledging Resistance and Offering Reassurance: Recognise the scepticism around AI and provide a safe space for employees to express their concerns.
  2. Personalised Training: Tailor AI training to individual roles, demonstrating specific, practical benefits that make AI an asset rather than a disruption.
  3. Tool Selection and Integration: Support teams in identifying and integrating the right AI tools, ensuring they become a seamless extension of current workflows.
  4. Continuous Support and Development: Offer guidance through the transition, empowering professionals to confidently apply AI in their day-to-day tasks.

At The Future Communicator, our framework starts by showcasing the art of the possible, with relevant examples from the client’s industry. Once initial resistance is addressed, we focus on practical training and development, empowering individuals with the skills they need to make AI a valuable, everyday tool. Finally, we assist companies in selecting the best tools, ensuring they are seamlessly integrated and aligned with company goals.

The Stakes Are High: A Cautionary Look at AI Failures

It’s important to recognise the challenge of adopting AI. According to the RAND Corporation, over 80% of AI projects fail—a rate twice that of non-AI IT projects. Research from Melbourne Business School also shows that up to 90% of AI projects fail in organisations with low analytical maturity. These statistics highlight that without a strong foundation and clear strategy, even the best intentions can fall short.

Avoiding the Pitfalls of Shadow AI

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, as AI becomes more prevalent, many employees are embracing tools under the radar, creating what’s known as “Shadow AI.” When not managed properly, Shadow AI exposes organisations to compliance risks, data breaches, and security vulnerabilities. This is where frameworks like our AI Halo Framework come in, enabling businesses to reap AI’s benefits while mitigating associated risks.

Turning FOFO into an Opportunity

The key to effective AI adoption isn’t just about addressing resistance. It’s about transforming FOFO from a barrier into an opportunity. With the right policies, training, and support, your organisation can turn this challenge into a competitive advantage. Embrace AI confidently, empower your workforce, and ensure a secure, compliant transition into the AI era.

Thank you Peter. I normally talk about FOFO in the context of communication #measurement and the fear of being confronted with 'a poor report card'. But I suppose fear also plays a role in A.I. adoption. ?? Looking forward to reading your newsletter - right now I am about to teach a class on Custom GPTs and hope the students don't have FOFO! ????
