July Review

Energy management

July didn’t get off to the best of starts. I collapsed during a work night out which was worrying for the people picking me up off of the floor...

Concerned family & friends offered me advice and they all said similar things like “you’re always on the go” and "you live your life at 100mph trying to do everything”.

I needed to understand more about energy management as I think this could have been the reason for the collapse, trying to do too many things all at the same time. As with all things when you want to learn more I went to google. What surprised me was the first page of results weren’t anything to do with the human body and how we manage our energy.

Is this because so little people focus on their energy management?

Is this why "burning out" is becoming more common.

I did however find this great article from Harvard Business review - Manage your energy, not your time (https://hbr.org/2007/10/manage-your-energy-not-your-time)

I would recommend everyone to read this article, we are all leading busier lives and try to juggle multiple things all at once. Some of the points in the article really hit home.

My something new

Croatia

I'm a keen traveler and have a number of places I want to visit on my bucket list. One of the places that has been high up on my list for many years has been Croatia. For people who are keen Game of Thrones fans, Dubrovnik is the setting of Kings Landing. Croatia was absolutely beautiful and I've recommended it to everyone since. The 2 hour flight is also a big bonus!!

While I was away I also had an outdoor massage for the first time, It was lovely to be in beautiful surroundings and to take time to relax. As I mention below I read the 5am Club book by Robin Sharma, Robin actually advises to live a peak life you should aim to have 2 massages per week.

I won't be doing 2 massages per week but I will be looking to have one every month as part of my plan. Some of the benefits you can achieve by incorporating this into your plan could be;

  • Massage benefits 31% reduction of cortisol (the fear hormone)
  • 31% increase in dopamine (the neurotransmitter of motivation)
  • 28% elevation of serotonin (the neurochemical responsible for regulating anxiety & raising happiness)
  • Reduced muscle tension
  • Elevations in the signalling of muscle cells to make more mitochondria

5am Club by Robin Sharma

Score 8/10

I originally thought this book would be a step by step guide to becoming a member of the 5am club. It was very different to the way I thought. Robin actually shares the 5am Club insights through a story of a billionaire who teaches an Entrepreneur and an artist the 5am methods "Own your morning, elevate your life" through a journey.

I won't give away too much about the book but I'm going to share what I will now be including in my morning routine;

  • 90/90/1 Rule - For 90 days focus the first 90 minutes of your workday one thing.
  • 2 Massage protocol - I will be doing at least open massage per month to help reduce cortisol and increase dopamine.
  • Traffic University - Listen to podcasts and audiobooks while you’re commuting.
  • Sixty Minute Student - Study for sixty minutes every day

Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual by Jocko Willink

Jocko Willink was a Navy Seal for 20 years, this is the first book I've read of his. I listened to his two incredible books (Extreme Ownership) and (The Dichotomy of Leadership).

The book gets straight to the point similar to Sean Whalen's How to make S**t happen I read earlier in the year. Jocko provides practical advice and like many of the books I've read this year how applying discipline into daily habits eventually lead to the life we most desire.
