Focus on what you can control

I shared this message with my team last week, and I wanted to share it here, too.
COVID-19 has rocked our world in every conceivable way. We’re all dealing with this in our own way, and we’re all struggling on some level—some more than others.
I’d like to share some thoughts on ways to manage through this time.
I’ve been reflecting on the early days of Simplicity, around 2007-8, when the global financial crisis hit us hard. That’s when I began delivering weekly Consulting 101 workshops to professionals who found themselves evaluating career options, by choice or layoffs. One key message that I delivered then is also applicable today: Focus on what you can control.
In a world where so much feels out of our control, I find comfort in reminding myself that it’s up to me to choose fear or opportunity. Fear is a downward spiral that leads to stress, anger, and resentment with no solution. Opportunity opens our minds to creativity, possibility, and innovation.
Here are a few ways to refine your focus:
Be mindful of your inputs
In our 24/7 news cycle, it’s easy to get sucked into the drama and feel helpless. Be informed, but know your limit and take time to tune out.
Practice self-care
Our families, clients, and teams need us to show up as the best version of ourselves and strong leaders. I know you’ve heard it before (especially us moms!), but it’s more important than ever.
Be intentional: Put it on your calendar. What little things can you do to fill your soul? Call a friend, go for a walk, watch a movie, read a good book, give to your local charity, take a bath … whatever it is, take time to add these activities throughout your day. These little actions can lead to big differences in how we recharge and how we show up.
Be a problem solver
This is what you do best! What do you need help with right now? What does your client or team need most right now? How can you be a part of the solution?
Add value
How is your work adding positive value to your client or team? If you aren’t sure, then ask these two important questions: 1) What do you value that I am doing? 2) What can I do more of for you? Let your client or team tell you what they need right now, and listen and act on that.
Give yourself some grace
This is a trying time. You’re not alone if you feel stressed or anxious, and it’s ok to take a break when you need one. And reach out to your people if you need support or if you’re struggling.
We are all in this together. I want to hear from you. How are you supporting your team? What can Simplicity do better to support you?
Perfect message!
