FOCUS ON THE ‘WHAT’ NOT ‘WHY’

FOCUS ON THE ‘WHAT’ NOT ‘WHY’

Ahead of our upcoming SheSays Amsterdam event, ‘A Lesson on Looking’, here are some tips on how to shift your self-perception and make it your superpower...

Self-esteem is a mysterious thing. Why do some of us have it and others don’t? Where does it come from? And why is it so important? How you feel about yourself affects how you perform in life – from your career to your relationships.

Whether you want that promotion, want more people to like you, or simply want to feel less stressed, having healthy self-esteem can help you prepare for any challenge. It can give you the perseverance to succeed; the trick is to think of it as a muscle. Want it to grow stronger? Train it!

So roll up your sleeves and dive into our ‘looking’ exercises. Use them every day to enhance your self-perception.

Self-awareness is the ability to see yourself clearly. Owning it can help you feel more fulfilled, creative, and confident. It can help you become a better communicator and build stronger relationships. But practising it is easier said than done. In fact, 90% of people believe they’re self-aware when in reality only 10-15% truly are. So, how do you make sure you’re looking at an accurate reflection of yourself instead of a warped funhouse mirror? Tasha Eurich, Organisational Psychologist, has discovered a simple fix: the next time you face a problem, ask yourself ‘What’ not ‘Why'. For example: If you’re unhappy in your job, instead of asking yourself ‘Why do you hate your job?’ try asking ‘What do you dislike about your job?’. It’s that simple. The ‘why’ question will draw your focus to negative emotions and limitations. But the ‘what’ question can help you reach real insights, help you see potential, and help you move forward.
