Focus on: Tunafish Media (TUNA) - Why they rank very well on the Manchester Embryo Index
If an alien landed in Manchester this week, spent a few days here, and then went back to their own planet, they would probably report on a few things that would include:
- "a recreation sport called 'football' is very popular"
- they keep saying "we do things differently here"
- "almost everyone is aware of a being named Sam Jones from an entity called Tunafish"
Let's face it, if you are reading this, you probably know - or have at least heard of - Tunafish Media (TUNA), probably because of something Sam Jones-related. Maybe it's some of their excellent video work, maybe it's because of Captain Manchester, or numerous other publicity campaigns that they have created, or maybe it's because of Sam/Tunafish's extremely commendable charity work with the homeless. And maybe it's even because you've seen Sam do a talk at a seminar across the city in his own, inimitable style.

And these speaking engagements, network activities, publicity stunts, videos, and charity work are the reasons for Tunafish Media's excellent score of 789.50 on the Embryo Index. They 'do' self-promotion, networking and awareness better than most companies across many sectors that have ten times their budget and/or company lifespan.
Considering the size of the business - and the fact that they have never used the services of a PR company - they manage (mainly via Sam's activity) to be known by a very wide network of well-known professionals and newcomers alike. In fact, I met someone in the PR sector last week from Birmingham, that when prompted, said that the only people they knew from Manchester were Morrisey and "Sam Jones from Tunafish"!
The Embryo Index page for Tunafish Media (TUNA) shows why they are so well known across the city's B2B network.
For example, their 'press score' (the number of news items across several Manchester business publications) of 49.5 is very high for a company of their size. In fact, 'pound for pound', their press score is one of the highest in the Manchester Embryo Index. It is also by far the highest press score for a company that does not use a PR company to promote themselves.
As well as ranking very well for press activity, Tunafish also rank in the top 20% for social media prowess. Not only is their social media activity well done, they have a substantial, interactive audience, too. Whilst a score of 38 may seem low out of context, other than the giants that are companies such as BooHoo, Warburtons, Missguided, and Social Chain, they rank very well for social media.
And you can see from just some of the trophies that they have accumulated why they have secured an excellent ranking for a small business in Manchester.
Tunafish Media's (TUNA) award of 'Media Darling' shows that they know how to work the press. A network trophy is given only to companies that operate well around the city's various networking groups and build strong relationships. The brand awareness trophy is given to companies that are known to a large part of the business community, and of course, the charity work trophy is given for excellence in this area.
Where Tunafish Media haven't translated success is in various online factors, such as visits to their website from non-brand search queries. Whilst they will be mentioned by various marketing departments around the city when they are deciding to choose video as an addition to their marketing assets, companies that are unaware of Tunafish will struggle to find them from a range of Google searches.
Summary
Whether you are or are not aware of Tunafish Media (TUNA), take a look at their Embryo Index page to see how and why their marketing tactics work to make them one of the best known small businesses in the city. You will see how their activity works to create them a steady flow of leads and opportunities without having too much (if any) search or PPC activity.
