Focus on Talent - Learning #40: Challenges with Employee Fit

Hello Alberta Innovation Community,

This week we continue to highlight insights we’ve gained through our TechBOOST (Technology Business Optimization, Operations, Scaleup, and Talent) program.

Over 60% of the companies applying to TechBOOST mentioned that they had hired employees that ended up not being a good fit for their organization. When asked to expand upon why the employee was not a good fit - the responses fell into five main categories, as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1: Reasons for Poor Employee Fit

Figure 1: Reasons for Poor Employee Fit

The chart shows the top 3 issues as:

  • 38%: Performance Issues
  • 29%: Skills issues (such as “Misrepresentation of Skills” and “Poor Skills/Lack of Skills”)
  • 24%: Misalignment with Company Culture/Values

Performance issues may arguably be related to multiple items - including skills issues, as employees with insufficient skills are more likely to display poor performance through incomplete work or not meeting deadlines. Also previous Focus on Talent articles have pointed out the importance of company culture to employee retention

When the cost of replacing an employee can range from 50% to 200% of their annual salary, it’s clear how important it is to assess for employee fit at the earliest possible stage. By taking the time to learn how to craft an accurate job description and how to assess candidates at the interview stage, you’re much more likely to hire the right person the first time.
