Focus on E.Q. Over I.Q.

Focus on E.Q. Over I.Q.

Tom Sittema is one of the leading businesspeople in the Orlando area. He has lots of wisdom to share on this episode of Crossman Conversations CEO Edition. As President of CrossMarc Services, I am always seeking to learn and evolve as a leader at my company. I sat down and discussed with Sittema his keys to being an effective CEO.

Tom Sittema is the Executive Chairman of Stepstone Private Wealth and has over thirty years of experience working in finance. He served as the CEO of CNL Financial Group for eight years. Sittema stresses that though being reproachful is a large part of being a CEO, a large part of it is also being empathetic—or, as he puts it, having an “emotional quotient.”

“The E.Q. skill set is very different between a highly successful leader and an average leader. Typically, highly successful leaders are very high on the E.Q. scale. And that would include things like empathy and self-awareness and recognizing your own limitations; surrounding yourself with people that make you better, that maybe in some cases, challenge you in new and different ways to be able to listen and accept that kind of feedback. Those are skill sets in great leaders.”

Sittema also discussed the importance of being able to communicate as a CEO. You have to be able to articulate your vision as concisely as possible. Sittema believes this is what often sets a good leader apart from an exceptional leader. Additionally, I asked for Sittema’s opinion on the financial market. He shared his opinions on why the nation isn’t necessarily going into a recession.
