Focus on the Apprenticeship opportunity - not the government target

#apprenticeshiplevy #futureofwork

The world of Apprenticeships continues to evolve and in many cases - misinform (a little like Brexit!). The opportunity for organisations to begin properly preparing their workforce skills for the future of work, is real. I'm working with some forward thinking and motivated organisations who have a desire for change but simply struggle to navigate through the complexities of the Levy.

In reality the target is irrelevant as whether the government hit it or not will not affect organisations in any way. What is annoying is that the target chat is a distraction from the real questions such as when will non-levy payers be fully supported in hiring and training apprentices?

How will OFSTED actually regulate the training providers and will quality of teaching be a measurement?

Focusing on the 3million target brings the discussion back to quantity and the focus should always be about quality.Perhaps if the Government and Media placed their attention towards the positive opportunities the Apprenticeship can offer - the results would be a little different!

UK government signals retreat from apprenticeship target

Both Theresa May and the Department for Education (DfE) have refused to comment on whether the UK government expects to meet its goal of creating 3m apprenticeships by April 2020, or even whether the target still applied. Asked three times yesterday whether the government would meet its goal, the prime minister’s official spokeswoman declined to comment, while the DfE also refused to commit to the target when questioned by education website FE Week. To reach the 3m target by April 2020, the government would need about 68,000 new apprenticeships to start each month between now and then, according to EEF, the manufacturers’ association. Since an apprenticeship levy was introduced in April last year, the average monthly start rate has been 28,000. Shadow education secretary Angela Rayner said Labour had warned “time and time again” that the target was a mistake, and urged the government to “focus on delivering high-quality apprenticeships instead of chasing arbitrary numbers.”
