F.O.C. n' Slides: Belonging Shifts Our Tripart Emotional State, Fear-Belonging-Aspiration

This graphic titled "Belonging Shifts Our Tripart Emotional State" presents a matrix that explores how our state of belonging impacts the emotional states of fear and aspiration. It is divided into six sections, that illustrate how being in belonging moves us into the good sides of both fear and aspiration, while being out moves us into the bad sides.

It's a useful framework for understanding personal and team dynamics in various environments, be it work, social, or family settings.

Good Side of Fear (fear for)

  • In belonging we're driven to not let each other down
  • We will learn and practice more
  • Illustration: One of us reaching out to help another who is struggling, showing our commitment and support

Belonging (in)

  • We fear less and aspire more
  • We neuro-chemically transition from fight/flight to a state of unite & fight
  • Illustration: We stand together, holding hands, united in our shared journey and support for one another

Aspiration (aspire with)

  • We can achieve more than we could ever alone
  • We've got each other's back
  • Illustration: We look up at the stars together, dreaming and aspiring as a team, knowing that our support for one another makes us stronger

Bad Side of Fear (fear of)

  • We could get hurt
  • We don't know how to handle this
  • Illustration: One of us stands with arms outstretched in confusion and fear, symbolizing our uncertainty and inaction

Belonging (out)

  • We fear more and aspire less
  • We move into a state of fight/flight and go even further into isolation
  • Illustration: One of us is isolated and caged, representing how exclusion makes us feel disconnected and alone

Aspiration (aspire at the expense of)

  • A coworker is in my way.
  • So what (I don't care) if she fails!
  • Illustration: We push and fight against each other, showing how competition with a lack of belonging leads to conflict and undermines our collective success.

In summary, this graphic emphasizes the importance of fostering a Feel, Own, Care Belonging environment that puts us on the good side of both fear and aspiration.

This is a more effective graphic than I thought at the outset, Paul. The two halves seem to divide along Growth/Abundance vs Fixed/Scarcity. We usually think about those as individual mindsets, but in this case I think we can see the the impact in the context of the collective vs isolation. My friend John Knotts, an expert in organizational psychology and also having written a book on fear, may have some insights to this that I would be interested to hear.
