FMCSA’s New Tire Rules: What You Need to Know

Starting this year, the?FMCSA?is tightening up the rules for steer tires. Here’s what you need to know from the latest tire regulations.

?

The Big Change: Tread Depth for Steer Tires

To promote safety, the FMCSA is requiring the following:

All steer tires must have a tread depth of at least?4/32?of an inch.

Steer tires are your rig’s primary source of control. If your tread depth becomes worn and slippery, you risk losing control.

This mandate by the FMCSA is intended to keep the rubber on the road.

How to tell if your tires are compliant:?If you can place a quarter into a tread groove and still see Washington’s head, it’s time to change your tires.

All other tires must have a tread depth of 2/32 of an inch.

For trailer, drive, etc., all other tires be 2/32 of an inch.

How to tell if your tires are compliant:?If the rubber bars inside the grooves are flush with the tread, it’s time to replace them. Remember: Never check your tires in only one spot. Your tires may be misaligned and worn unevenly.

What Are the Consequences for Not Complying with FMCSA Tires Rules?

If a carrier is discovered with tires that do not meet these new criteria, they may be subject to the following consequences:

  • Fines may reach $1,000 for repeat offenders.
  • Violators may be sidelined until their tires are replaced.
  • Your safety score may be docked, making it more difficult to secure contracts.

The new FMCSA regulations for steer tires are intended to keep carriers safe. If your steer or other tires do not meet the new 4/32” and 2/32” standards, the consequences can range from a fine to a wreck.

By keeping your tires compliant, you can stay safe, keep expenses down, and keep moving.
