F.M.Costantino on ASAI VIMEO

I was honored to be invited by the current Officers of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI) - a professional member group of illustrators and artists whose business is providing image-making skills for the design professions - for an interview about my work and the beginnings of our Society.

I had started this organization with my esteemed colleague Steve Oles in 1986 in Boston; and which durable society now encompasses the globe. ASAI annually sponsors the annual Architecture In Perspective (AIP) Competition, which attracts hundreds of entries from numerous countries, to vie for the Society's, and the world's, highest Award for such illustration - the Hugh Ferriss Memorial Prize.

To further promote our Society, I was asked by the current Board, as was Steve and three other award-wining members, to engage in a live interview to discuss my career and work, and speak to the illustrations that I have produced. The initial interview in my case only covered about three hours, as well as a rather large folio of my varied works - in pencil, color pencil, watercolor, pen and ink, together with plein-air watercolor paintings, figure sketches and personal drawings, helped illustrate the various topics discussed with the interviewer.

After my providing high resolution scans of the works which a team had selected from this three-hour program, the very skillful ASAI video editors had a difficult time to assemble the final cut of this interview - down to an hour's length. That condensed version is now featured on the Society's web site, and currently is intended for our Members only. However, a much shorter interview - five minutes - provides a good sense of this interview, which I've decided to share in this LI forum -----

The dynamics of this brief video are quite telling to me, and true to my experiences for producing a variety of both simple design study sketches to complex architectural illustrations. I hope viewers on my LI network find the interview to be as insightful as well. Let me know. THANKS!

You are the best.

I personally remember all those iconic pieces in a day where computers did not exist. That money shot was vital to all projects going forward. Frank Costantino thanks for blazing an inspirational path forward for the rest of us. Your talent assisted some of the most talented architects that Boston featured at the time.
