The Flying V @ Work

Geese can increase their range by 70% on a migratory flight by flying in the V formation. They fly in this pattern to use less energy by relying on each other to create an uplift of air for the one behind it. Each goose also has a clear view on the direction they are going. Geese also honk to motivate one another, never to complain. The lead goose, never stays the lead goose, once tired, they move back in the V, and another goose takes the lead. As long as they have a flight plan, and stay in the formation, they get to their destination in the most efficient manner. They trust and rely on one another through to their destination. It is all about alignment.
Can you see how this same principle can be applied and utilized in business? Is your organization flying in a V formation? Are you all flying in the same direction? Are the members on the team motivating or complaining? How well are the members on the team(s) aligned in order to create a successful outcome?
As we all know, every person in our organization comes in with a certain set of talents and strengths. It is up to the leader to ensure that these strengths and talents are utilized strategically in order to create alignment. Having the team out of alignment causes friction, poor productivity, disengagement, and turn-over. In a time where retention of our people is key, are you taking the time to truly align your people for success? Are you expecting everyone on the team to be innovative and creating change because that is what you like to do? Are you expecting others to just wing it and figure it out on the fly, and get frustrated when they are trying to create a plan first?

Flying in a V formation takes work, and understanding each persons strengths to position them in the V can be challenging. But wouldn't it be worth it if you could go 70% further, and faster? Taking the time and effort to understand your people's strengths and creating alignment can bridge the gap between success and frustration.
