Flying high: Lessons in Leadership and Growth from Dark Cockpit

As 2025 begins, I’m excited to restart my journey of sharing the books I’m reading with you. Towards the end of last year, I found myself feeling a bit burned out, and reading—once a source of joy—took a backseat. Writing this newsletter was even further from my mind.
But I’m incredibly grateful to have people in my life who inspire me. Irina helped me rediscover the pleasure of reading books that aren’t about personal development, while my husband introduced me to books on breathing, meditation, and the power of setting intentions. Joe Dispenza’s work, in particular, has been a revelation—his books are a must-read if you’re exploring mindfulness and self-awareness.
I feel fortunate to have a job that allows me to take two full weeks off to recharge. This time has reminded me how important it is to reset, find balance, and reconnect with the things that bring joy—including this newsletter. I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts and discoveries with you in the year ahead!
The first book I completed this year is Dark Cockpit, a concise 200-page leadership guide by Emil Dobrovolschi, an airline commander, and Octavian Pantis, a renowned Romanian trainer. The core message I took away is the value of understanding what makes a great professional and the transformative power of a growth mindset in all areas of life.
1. First impressions matter
The authors emphasize that a strong first impression can set the tone for every interaction. In both aviation and professional life, how you show up—from your demeanor to your preparedness—creates trust and confidence. Approaching situations with a positive attitude, a warm smile, and professionalism ensures others see you as capable and dependable from the start.
2. Cultivate a growth mindset
Pilots are trained to embrace continuous learning and improvement. Similarly, professionals should approach every situation with curiosity and a willingness to grow. Mistakes are inevitable, but how you respond—by reflecting, learning, and improving—defines your success. A growth mindset allows you to handle challenges with resilience and adaptability.

3. Focus on quality and good communication?
A central message in the book is the importance of prioritizing quality in everything you do. Just as pilots double-check their instruments and procedures for precision, professionals must ensure that their work is thorough and well-executed. Rushing through tasks can compromise outcomes, while a focus on quality builds credibility and excellence.
4. Communicate clearly and proactively
In aviation, clear communication can mean the difference between safety and disaster. The authors highlight the need for professionals to communicate effectively—whether it's providing clear instructions, sharing feedback, or resolving conflicts. Proactive communication fosters collaboration, reduces misunderstandings, and builds stronger relationships.
5. Stay calm under pressure and be in control
Pilots are trained to remain calm and composed even in high-stakes situations. In the professional world, maintaining composure under pressure allows you to think critically and make better decisions. Practicing mindfulness, preparation, and confidence-building exercises can help you navigate challenges with a level head.
At its core, Dark Cockpit is a reminder that professionalism is about preparation, attitude, and consistency. By making a great first impression, embracing a growth mindset, focusing on quality, communicating clearly, and staying calm under pressure, you can excel in your career and inspire trust in those around you.
