"'Flying' into Focus"
They were engaging. They were challenging. They were debating. But it did not matter because, for a time, the audience was distracted. During last Wednesday’s (10/7) vice-presidential debate, a fly landed on top of Mike Pence’s head and sat there for more than two minutes.
As I was watching the debate, I noticed that the Internet quickly seized upon the moment; memes were all over the web. Mr. Pence continued to confront Senator Harris as the two exchanged verbal jabs, responses, and talking points. He looked directly at the camera, he was emphatic and concise in what he was saying, he presented his case. But none of it made a difference because people were not really listening to what he was saying; they could not get past the fly on his head.
There is a lesson here for us. As we go about the day-to-day of our lives, we may feel as though everything is okay. We might conclude that we are presenting to folks what we want and need them to know. But sometimes persons can see things about us of which we are not aware.
Ever noticed that person who speaks in a condescending fashion...but doesn't realize it? The person who is self-absorbed and me-centered...but doesn't know it? Have you ever come into contact with that man or woman who wants respect...but never gives it? All these individuals go about the daily business of their lives. They shop, attend classes, go to work, come to church...all without realizing they have a fly on their head.
The good news as you read this post is that you and I can avoid that embarrassing condition. How? Check yourself (2 Cor. 13:5). When we do all we can to assess our hearts and treat people like we want to be treated (Matt. 7:12), we are assured of a “buzz” free life!
Want to talk more about it? Feel free to contact us. And if you are in the Richmond area, come be our guest this Sunday morning. Onsite or online, you will always receive a friendly welcome and Bible-centered, encouraging word when you visit the West Broad Church of Christ!

4 年Great point. Hadn’t looked at it this way. Definitely don’t wanna be the person walking around with a fly on my head! Thanks for sharing James!
