Flying the Flag

Flying the Flag

For the first time in my life, I wrapped the New Zealand flag around my shoulders at the 'dock out' on that fateful morning of Saturday, 19th October, when Emirates Team New Zealand retained the America's Cup. I must have inspired something in the photographer (Josh McCormack Studio), as he asked me to pose to capture the moment with my cape unfurled like Superman. It was hard to contain my excitement—more like delirium! This was an event that I had passionately supported since I was 14 years old, and this time Go Media was an official supplier of the team, helping to tell their story back home.

As "Bliss" by The Dudes blasted from the speakers, Ngāti Whātua ōrakei prepared to send the team off with a powerful haka. The waka awaited on the water to lead them out, and in that moment, I was overwhelmed by a profound sense of pride in being a Kiwi. To don our flag, to hear the waiata and haka, it all culminated in an experience that I will cherish forever.

For a moment, it gave me a glimmer of hope that the New Zealand I still believe in actually exists. Yet, I can’t help but feel a sadness that this version of our country seems to be fading away.

In today's fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the values that connect us to our nation and each other. Patriotism isn't just about grand gestures; it's about the small, daily actions that reflect our commitment to our community and country.

Being patriotic means celebrating the diversity and richness of our heritage while striving to create a better future for everyone. It's about supporting local businesses, volunteering, and being active participants in our communities. It’s about standing up for what we believe in and advocating for positive change.

Let’s celebrate the moments that unite us and remind us of the pride we share in our heritage and our incredible country! What are some ways you show your patriotism in your daily life? Share your thoughts and let’s inspire each other.
