So many have asked about my flying experience so I decided to make a little post about it:
I flew from Dubai to Frankfurt (Frankfurt is for now the only destination Emirates flies to in Germany, it has not yet resumed fights to Hamburg). The airport in Dubai was completely empty. Almost scary empty. Have never seen the busiest airport in the world so quiet. As a gold member I usually check in in the business class area, that area is still closed. You need to come to the airport a bit earlier than usually. There is no online check in available at the moment.
To get to the check in area you walk through a short tunnel where they measure your temperature. Then an Emirates staff (dressed fully in protective gear) gives you a travel kit that has masks, gloves and sanitizer. And a form which you need to fill in before boarding. In my case I had to sign that I will inform the German health authorities the moment I land, state the address I will stay at, and give an emergency contact in Germany.
Check in counters all have protective shields. You are not allowed the small carry on suitcase, only 1 bag (purse or backpack or laptop bag etc).
Lounges are still closed. Duty free is open but not completely. You have to wear gloves and push a basket in front of you (as a social distance measure).
Boarding starts with people sitting in the back of the plane.
They still serve food on board but no more drinks in glasses. No water, juices etc. Only in small containers (I do hope we find a solution for this because that’s not very environment friendly). They still offer wine and beer. Not sure how they serve those. I didn’t have any.
You have to wear your mask the whole time. Only remove when eating. Everyone was wearing masks.
I thought it was a bit strange that they had so many people sitting close to each other while the whole back of the plane was completely empty. I had someone sitting in front of me and behind me. And at least 1 person in every row. I was flying economy.
We were only 45 people in a 777 plane.
Surprisingly upon arrival in Germany there was no temperature check. I didn’t need a negative COVID test to enter Germany. No quarantine was necessary.
To come back to Dubai you need a permit and a negative test. As I wasn’t sure when I would fly back I only booked a one way ticket to Germany.
All in all it was a pleasant experience. The staff was very friendly (they probably missed flying ??).
Hope this helps! Safe travels, friends.
