Flying Cars, Certified Personal Aerial Vehicles: Book Excerpt

Flying Cars, Certified Personal Aerial Vehicles: Book Excerpt

My new book “Flying Vehicles” (The Emergence of Personal Air Travel, Flying Cars, and Air Taxis) is now on sale as advanced air mobility (AAM) begins to reshape movement around the world.

In the book, based on months of research and interviews with industry executives, we provide a horizontal view of the new electric flying vehicle landscape.

Included is our in-depth discussion in a detailed worldwide look at vertiport developments, the role of airlines, automakers, technology companies and investors, all moving the industry ahead.

Here are two small excerpts from the book from the chapter “Flying Cars” and the chapter “PAVC, The Certified Personal Aerial Vehicle.”

From “Flying Vehicles” (The Emergence of Personal Air Travel, Flying Cars, and Air Taxis):

“Developers of flying cars must counter the perception that vehicles that drive and fly require a compromise on one or both aspects. One company had this realization when it started and aimed at exceeding expectations on both fronts.

The Switchblade flying car, a hybrid vehicle by Samson Sky in Redmond, Oregon, is the result of all that focus. Sam Bousfield, Founder and CEO of Samson Sky, has worked on the creation and development of the Switchblade for the past 15 years.

“I had just gotten done with a bit of work with some Boeing engineers on a high-speed aircraft design and then I was looking at the future of things,” says Bousfield. “I started looking at what the future of transportation is going to be.

“What I saw is the future as portrayed in Star Wars, Star Trek, The Fifth Element, that kind of thing, but pretty much all in the air with the ground reserved for walking or the occasional delivery of goods. But I saw that as a future.

“Even in the Jetsons, most of the Jetsons, when they first put that out, they had escalators, they had phone watches, they had all kinds of things that all have come to pass, except for the flying car. So I said, we have to do that, so that's what I looked at.

“The future of travel is in the air. My thought process took me quite some time and figured we're going to need something that does a little of both, because you still have so much happening on the ground, and you've got to interact with that, and in the air, that's the future. It's something that would do a little of both.”

Congratulations on the release of your book! The emergence of personal air travel is such a fascinating and timely topic. What do you see as the biggest hurdles in making flying cars a part of everyday life? Looking forward to learning more from your insights.
