Flygskam - Major Event Suppliers?
‘Flygskam’ – what can WeTrack do?
The activism of Greta Thunberg – and today’s new band of Extinction Rebellion protests here in London and around the World – reminds us once more to be conscious of the effects of flying.
‘Flygskam’ – flight-shaming – is a growing anti-flying movement that originated in Sweden in 2018. Commercial flights currently make up around 2.5% of global carbon emissions, and the volume of international flights only continues to expand rapidly. Slow improvements in areas such as fuel efficiency are just that – slow.
At WeTrack we’re thinking about how our company can respond to the movement, and, ultimately, cut down our negative environmental impact. We love being an international company with some amazing clients around the world – I’ve had business trips to Switzerland, Dubai and Australia recently. But what can we do to minimise our contribution to the environmental crisis?
We’re not ignorant environmentally. We’re a virtually-paperless office. As a tech company, the nature of our product digitises work and improves sustainability by planning properly (and therefore having fewer ‘late-runs’). Almost all of our first contact with a client is through screen-shares.
We will try to fly less, although we do only fly when completely necessary. Rail travel across Europe is a definite possibility, again at a cost of time and money.
How else could we off-set our negative environmental impact? Tree-planting?
What do event profs suggest we could do more? Do your company have any innovative environmental initiatives?
