[FLR] When Familiar Patterns Fail: Leadership Lessons from an Emerging Health Crisis | Friday Leadership Report | Please Forward
Happy Friday,
We've all heard of the 10,000-hour principle—the idea that it takes years of dedicated practice to master the complexities of our professions. As leaders, we're trained to rely on deep understanding and experience to recognize patterns, solve problems, and deliver results quickly.
But what happens when the familiar patterns fail us and the usual solutions no longer work?
This is the situation Dr. Alier Marrero, a neurologist in Moncton, New Brunswick, recently faced. An unexplained illness has emerged in the region, affecting 48 confirmed cases, with dozens more suspected. The patients, ranging in age from 18 to 35 and equally spread across men and women, presented symptoms that initially mimicked Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), a rare and fatal brain disorder.
Dr. Marrero, drawing on his extensive experience, suspected CJD as the diagnosis. But he and his team were puzzled when the lab results returned negative. As more cases emerged, the patterns they relied upon to understand and diagnose the disease seemed to fall apart.
The Leadership Challenge
As leaders, we often find ourselves in similar positions; we look for patterns in data, behaviours, or outcomes to identify solutions quickly. The 10,000-hour principle teaches us that with enough experience, we can solve problems efficiently and effectively. But what happens when those familiar patterns don't fit? When the usual solutions don't work?
It's in these moments that authentic leadership is tested.
Dr. Marrero reached a critical juncture where he realized that experience alone wasn't enough. "When you have not seen something, likely, we have not learned to see it," he noted. This profound insight underscores a vital leadership lesson: sometimes, our experience and learned patterns can close our eyes to new possibilities and emerging threats.
The Power of Pausing
As Dr. Marrero notes, the brain is an enigma, and understanding it—or any complex problem—requires more than observation, analysis, and experience. It also requires an openness of mind, a willingness to break free from the patterns we've spent years mastering.
He encourages his students—and, by extension, all of us—to take time to step back from the frenetic pace of problem-solving. He advises them to stop, cease analyzing, and be. These moments of meditation and stillness, he believes, are when the brain becomes more efficient, often providing the answers we've been seeking without the pressure of active problem-solving.

Conclusion
In today's fast-paced world, where we're constantly urged to do more and solve problems faster, taking a step back might seem counterintuitive. However, as Dr. Marrero's experience shows, it's often in these quiet moments of reflection that true breakthroughs occur.
As we face increasingly complex challenges in our respective fields, let's remember that leadership isn't just about what we've learned through years of experience.?
It's about cultivating the ability to see beyond the obvious, embrace uncertainty, and find clarity in stillness.
This approach helps solve today's problems and prepares us for tomorrow's unknown challenges.
Along the road with you,
Alan
