Flowing In-between
Catching us a bit off-guard, COVID has taught us that work-life balance is a myth.
The concept of work-life balance assumes that work and life are separate and distinct, but the stressors of the pandemic (including post-pandemic) have shown us that it is nearly impossible to separate the two.
Instead of balance, organizations should strive for harmony between work and life. Balance implies that work and life are given equal time, with work taking up no more than 8 hours a day and life taking up the remaining 16 hours. However, we know that this is not realistic.
Harmony, on the other hand, recognizes that sometimes work must take a backseat to immediate life needs, and sometimes life must take a backseat to work obligations. Harmony requires open communication, empathy, safety, and trust between employees and their organizations.
?Some tips to help make the Mind Shift:
- Think Simple: When we make things too technical, we create barriers. To exercise harmony, we need to be fluid and adaptable.
- Think Compassion: Having sincere consideration for the impact on others helps build meaningful communication and connections, which are needed to ensure maximum efficiency.
- Think Long-Term: Short-term thinking may create busyness, but it is not always sustainable. By shifting our focus to long-term goals, we can foster greater harmony and provide the best maintenance for ourselves, our team, and our business.
