Flowers in a vase - Suriyamoorthy
Flowers in a vase....and is that a large prawn in there as well? The vibrant composition of this painting is much evident - the profusion of flowers provide a mass of floral forms in the top half while below, a selection of regional fruits and water pitcher vie for attention as well. What do you think the artist is trying to communicate here?
#Artist Suriyamoorthy (1944-2012) was an artist in a league of his own. His one-man movement created ripples in the #art world with a unique process and procedure in place. His colours and pigments were entirely created by him from scratch. For starters, he used the waters of the holy rivers of #India – the Brahmaputra, the Ganges, the Godavari, the Krishna and the Cauvery and also the Abhishekam* waters from various temples for his #paintings.
When his father who was a Siddha practitioner passed away, the #medicines were falling into disuse. Suriyamoorthy began to mix the various medical ingredients to achieve the colours he wanted. He also ground up sea #shells to derive white colour, took natural gum and bark of the trees in his garden for other colours. These handmade colours mixed with the waters of the holy rivers and temples that he had collected were the only things that made their way into his paintings. His formula for each colour took him many years to perfect. His formula #pigments, he assured, would retain their qualities of #colour and brightness for more than half a century.
Suriyamoorthy was also one artist to not have followed any old master or any –isms of the art world. The genuineness of his works leap out at the viewer and appeal in a way like none other.
