Flower growers
Eugène van Veldhoven
Designer of textiles and wallcovering since 1993. Designing patterns for textile industry, with a focus on decorative techniques. Producing short runs for fashion houses. Researching 3D printing flexibel materials.
I started this series about flower photography and floral pattern design with a photo of myself as a young kid, helping my father in his ornamental garden, and I would like to finish for now with a photo of my grandfather; the father of my mother.
This is him bringing vegetables to the daily auction. All gardeners used barges like these as a means of transport. Special attention was given to the presentation in order to appease auctioneers and buyers. Most canals in the area are still there and in cold winters (which we unfortunately have less and less...) we would ice skate from village to village.
My grandfather was not originally from our area and was looked upon very sceptically by the locals. Two of his grandsons, however, now have an international company that grows all kinds of orchids and receive international awards for their advanced sustainable way of working. But the scale of everything has changed and it certainly does not look as picturesque as on this picture anymore.
