Quality of Life: German Study Sees Cannabis as a Potential Key to Chronic Disease

Can cannabis cure everything?

Of course, not, however, with quality of life, a consistent pattern emerges.…

A survey in Germany, involving patients with chronic conditions, revealed that cannabis therapy significantly enhanced their quality of life, irrespective of their specific illnesses.

  • The participants comprised a diverse group with long-standing chronic nature with their conditions.

  • The analysis revealed a consistent pattern, with six symptoms—pain (71%), sleep disturbances (64%), stress/tension (52%), inner restlessness (52%), depressive mood (44%), and muscle tension (43%)—all emerging as significant.
  • Based on the participants' evaluations, an overwhelming 84% reported a notable improvement in their quality of life.

The study's authors deduced that cannabis therapy holds the potential to significantly uplift the quality of life for patients battling chronic diseases, independent of the disease's nature.

Schmerz. 2024 Mar 7. German. doi: 10.1007/s00482-024-00802-4. Epub ahead of print. PMID: 38451340.

The study's authors concluded that cannabis may: “improve the quality of life of chronically ill patients, regardless of the underlying disease.”

Cannabis Topicals Heal Treatment-Resistant-Ulcers: Insights from an Open-Label Trial

Despite conventional medical interventions, treatment-resistant ulcers have an increased risk of complications including chronic pain, impaired mobility, cellulitis, infection, and amputation. Can cannabis help?

Cannabis Topicals Heal Treatment-Resistant-Ulcers: Insights from an Open-Label Trial

In a small open study of complex patients with leg ulcers resistant to conventional treatments, the application of topical cannabis formulations showed healing benefits.

  • The participants, with an average age of 76, presented a spectrum of health conditions.
  • Patients received wound treatment through the application of cannabis-based topical medications, complemented by compression bandaging.
  • This regimen was applied to the wounds and the surrounding skin every other day.
  • Remarkably, in 79% of the patients, and 81% of the ulcers full healing was observed.
  • This healing was defined by complete epithelialization (skin healing), and was achieved within a median period of 34 days.
  • The remaining participants who did not fully heal also showed signs of skin progression, although they did not complete the study.

Importantly, the cannabis-based treatment regimen was well-received by the patients, with no significant adverse reactions reported.

The researchers from the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Toronto, Canada, have posited an optimistic conclusion from their findings.

They suggest that topical cannabis-based medicines may offer a promising adjunctive therapy for the healing of venous leg ulcers, particularly in elderly patients and those with multiple health challenges, especially when used alongside compression therapy.

Have you ever had a teacher who changed your life?

Dr. Jake with Mishima Sensei, in Nagoya Japan, practicing the ancient Japanese art of Shiatsu. ??

Mishima Sensei and Dr. Jake, Nagoya, Japan approx 1994-1995

How Mishima Sensei changed the arc of my life.

He was an acupuncturist, a healer, and a martial artist, and had the serene aura of Zen about him. ??

This taste of Zen was probably the greatest gift I received from him. We discussed Budo, the nature of martial arts, and the Zen concept of ‘no-mind’ or ‘mushin’.

To my delight, I discovered the late 15th-century letters of Takuan Soho, a Rinzai Zen Buddhist monk and a mentor to the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.

Dr Jake at the Dojo, Nagoya, Japan in May of 1995

In his famous text, the ‘Unfettered Mind’ Takuan gives instructions on flow states in his letters to Japanese swordmasters:

  • "The mind must always be in the state of 'flowing,' for when it stops anywhere that means the flow is interrupted and it is this interruption that is injurious to the well-being of the mind.”
  • “To speak in terms of your own martial art, when you first notice, the sword is moving to strike you, if you think of meeting that sword, just as it is, your mind will stop at the sword in just that position, your own movements will be undone, and you will be cut down by your opponent. This is what stopping means.”
  • ”Understanding comes about through feeling, from moment to moment in the midst of activity. This is known as the immediate state."
  • "The mind is not swayed by any object, and thus moves freely, responding to situations without being encumbered by them."

These early discussions formed the foundations of my understanding of flow and flow states and are the earliest writings of flow I have encountered. ??

Mishima and I also talked extensively about Miyamoto Musashi’s spiritual and mental evolution from a teenage thug to the greatest swordsman Japan had ever seen.

Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa

Again, the story of Musashi was a discovery for me of the evolution of a mind of chaos to a state of serenity.

Musashi’s flow states are discussed in the famous book by Eiji Yoshikawa that bears his name.

Mishima Sensei also told me something then that I didn’t believe at the time, and that took me years later to understand.

Mishima said “Sports are bad for the Body”. I couldn’t understand this at the time because I was young, and every athlete I saw was in magnificent shape.

It was only later as an aging athlete myself that I realized that Sports can put undue stress on the aging body and that the care and maintenance of the human frame is a key to healthy aging.
