Flooding is a recurring problem in Nigeria caused by heavy rainfall, inadequate drainage systems, non-compliance with planning and environmental regulations, ocean surges, and water release from the Lagbo Dam in northern Cameroon. This often results in loss of life, damage to property and infrastructure, erosion and landslides, disruption of essential services, and increased health risks from waterborne diseases. It is important to acknowledge the gravity of these impacts and take proactive steps to mitigate these adverse effects.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) predicted flooding for July, with another peak expected in September after the August break. This means that flash floods and urban floods are anticipated in various cities and towns. It is estimated that the flooding may affect 178 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) also revealed that several communities in Bayelsa, Lagos, Rivers, Gombe, and Delta states have high risks of flooding. Additionally, areas such as Langtang and Shendam in Plateau State, Sumaila and Tudun wada in Kano State, Shagari, Goronyo, and Silame in Sokoto State, Okwe in Delta State, Kachia in Kaduna State, Upenekang in Akwa Ibom State, Mubi, Demsa, Song, Mayo-Belwa, Jimeta, and Yola in Adamawa State, Katsina, Jibia, Kaita, and Bindawa in Katsina State, Wara, Yelwa, and Gwandu in Kebbi State, Shinkafi and Gummi in Zamfara State, Briyel in Borno State, Gwaram in Jigawa State, Jebba in Kwara State, and Mashegu and Kontagora in Niger State have also been considered as flashpoints.
