FLOATING!
This past December, a friend gifted me an experience of connecting with my inner and yes, “higher” Self. What some call sensory deprivation and others isolation, I was to float in a tank that contained 10 inches of body temperature water and over 1,000 pounds of salt. Admittedly unsettled at first, I was determined to make the most of the gift. By the time my hour was up, I had befriended the tank and one might say I befriended myself. How profound the experience of surrendering, to know that if I relaxed I would be embraced by this viscous water that was there to hold me, much like a warm hug. Continuing on my journey, all sense of time and space dissipated, and in a primal sense I felt love for all beings that surely included my Self!
The other day, I was catching up with an amazing colleague, Sean Driscoll, on Zoom. When I asked him about the background he had uploaded, he smiled as he described one of his favorite places - Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine. Our conversation meandered to what else but the Covid-19 Pandemic. Sean became somewhat introspective as he described how his calendar was instantly erased, certainly not ideal for his work and livelihood as a consultant, certainly not ideal for anyone! Ever so calmly, Sean shared that his experience was one of floating as he simply allowed what would unfold in due time. As he shared his truth, he leaned back and it appeared as though he was floating in the waters of Goose Rocks Beach!
It was in this exchange with Sean that I remembered the blissful state of floating, call it sensory deprivation or isolation. How grateful for the reminder to surrender… to relax into whatever unfolds even when I don’t know what that is. While none of us will come out of this time unscathed, we can in so many ways become better version of Self. Thanks Sean, for reminding me to float… I can’t wait to hang out in that salt water yet again!

4 年Thanks for this. Good reminder about how scary it can be to cease control, and at the same time how it can give us new perspective on whatever we face.

4 年Reminds me of when I visited the Dead Sea and floated in the water. Very surreal.
