Flipping the Script on Labels: Elevating People Through Strengths, Not Limits

Flipping the Script on Labels: Elevating People Through Strengths, Not Limits

By: Sharon Birn

In our society, labels serve a crucial purpose. They provide essential information about products, job roles, and people, helping us understand who someone is and how they navigate the world. When used correctly, labels are incredibly useful tools for insight and understanding. Labels serve as stepping stones, leveling the playing field for those who communicate, process information, or move through the world differently. They were intended to highlight areas where individuals may need accommodations to thrive and reach their full potential.

But somewhere along the way, society started misusing labels, creating rigid definitions that box people into restrictive categories, often with a limiting mindset. We see it happen all too often: the moment someone receives a label or diagnosis, that label quickly becomes a narrow lens through which society, and even the individual themselves, may begin to view their potential. Instead of supporting individuals, labels often restrict them. They overshadow unique strengths and skills, emphasizing what someone may struggle with or “cannot do” rather than celebrating what they can do.

Labels as a Tool, Not a Constraint

When used correctly, labels should foster understanding. They should help individuals and those around them recognize how someone moves, communicates, or processes the world. This understanding should guide us in providing accommodations that allow each person to participate fully and contribute meaningfully to society. Instead, we have a pattern of viewing labels regarding deficits—distilling someone down to a list of perceived limitations in essential areas of daily life like mobility, communication, or learning.

We need to remember the original purpose of labels: to offer insights and information, not to confine. When we limit individuals based on labels, we’re not just holding them back; we’re holding back communities, workplaces, and society. Every time we restrict someone’s potential, we miss out on the unique contributions they could make—their talents, skills, and abilities that, if nurtured, could benefit us all.

Flipping the Script: Focusing on Strengths and Abilities

What if we flipped the script and started labeling people based on their strengths, talents, and abilities? Imagine a world where we stop focusing on what people cannot do and instead celebrate the beautiful things they can do. When we choose to see people through the lens of their capabilities, we’re not just empowering them; we’re creating a society that recognizes and harnesses the extraordinary diversity of skills and perspectives that each person brings to the table.

This shift would mean using labels to highlight and maximize each person’s contribution to themselves, their communities, and society. Rather than viewing someone’s diagnosis or label as a ceiling on their potential, we’d see it as an entry point to understanding how we can best support them in reaching their highest potential. No more defining people by their perceived deficits. No more limiting beliefs that hold people back. It’s time to use labels as tools for empowerment, guiding us to create environments where every individual can contribute their best.

So many times we attach labels to people and judge them based on biases instilled by our upbringing or societal pressures. When we can accept people as they are, and offer a safe space for people to shine, we can break down those biases. I love the work you are doing, Sharon Birn!
