Flipping the Script 2024: Reflections and Outcomes

Flipping the Script 2024: Reflections and Outcomes

In 2024, Cultural and Creative Industries Skillnet reran Flipping the Script, an innovative programme aimed at cultivating new talent in animation and writing. The programme comprised two distinct groups: EVOLVE, focused on professional development for underrepresented voices in the industry, and LISTEN HEAR, tailored for individuals with vision impairments. Designed to nurture diverse talent in animation and writing, these courses emphasised accessibility, inclusivity, and skill-building.

What EVOLVE and LISTEN HEAR Taught Us

Both Evolve and Listen Hear stemmed from a shared mission: to amplify underrepresented voices in storytelling.

EVOLVE

Evolve was a broad program open to anyone self-identifying as underrepresented, encouraging participants to articulate why they felt this way in a short statement. This approach not only opened doors but also offered fascinating insights into participants' perspectives on identity and barriers.

The demographic makeup of Evolve often reflected patterns: individuals from migrant backgrounds, LGBTQ+ communities, neurodivergent participants, and primary carers.

One of the most tangible outcomes from these programs was the creation of children's animated spec scripts, a key requirement for new writers to have as part of their portfolio to apply for writing roles in the television industry.

LISTEN HEAR

LISTEN HEAR was uniquely designed for individuals with vision impairments, offering a tailored approach to scriptwriting and storytelling that leveraged audio-first methods. This focus on accessibility and inclusivity gave participants the tools and confidence to explore their creative potential within an industry often perceived as out of reach.

In the search for writers who would meet the guidelines, LISTEN HEAR highlighted not only the demand for such initiatives but also the untapped potential that exists within this community. By looping in 3rd parties such as Vision Ireland to help reach into the VI community, we received 18 applications, with 10 successfully selected onto the course.

As the programme progressed, challenges emerged that underscored systemic barriers for the community in pursing TV writing careers. For example, the reliance on industry-standard software proved problematic due to its current lack of screen-reader compatibility. This is now being addressed by the software company.

Despite this hurdle, LISTEN HEAR was a resounding success. Participants gained skills, confidence, and access to course leaders who celebrated their voices.

Both EVOLVE and LISTEN HEAR highlighted the pressing need in Ireland to create spaces where diverse voices can flourish. They also underscored the importance of safe environments and connected networks that support participants in building long-term careers, with a focus on stories — stories that can and will stand on their own merit in any competitive industry.

What Worked: A Snapshot of Success

  1. A Safe and Inclusive Environment: Feedback highlighted how thoughtfully the programme catered to diverse needs. One participant shared, "I think the Evolve course was the most inclusive thing I have attended in my life! Never before have I felt seen like that, in the totality of who I am, with a sense that this was not a hinderance or something I needed to hide, but was completely acceptable and normal."
  2. Accessible Communication: From audio versions of emails to screen-reader-friendly notes, the programme made accessibility a priority. Another participant noted, "Every step of the way, there was access to feedback and questions through various mediums. If there was a preference to send a voice note instead of an email that was welcome. Trainer/writers and production team were adaptable and open to suggestions from trainees... This made such a difference"
  3. Discovering New Passions: Many participants credited the course with helping them uncover hidden potential. One commented, "I always thought of myself as being very imaginative.... I think fear has stopped me up until now but it was such a supportive and encouraging environment, it made me take the chance and do something different for myself... It's never occurred to me that I could work in creating cartoons so this is all very exciting. "
  4. Mentorship That Made a Difference: Participants praised the industry mentors for their dedication. "Dee did a fantastic job throughout, and all group and personal questions were answered in clear, concise communication, which is always appreciated. It was an open dynamic and there was never any issue seeking clarification. The mentorship element was invaluable."
  5. Community and Collaboration: A strong sense of camaraderie emerged among participants. One remarked, "Our class group was wonderful, its always lovely to spend time with other VI folk, the jokes! ... I think courses like this that develop the skills of those with disabilities in media have huge value. The genuine desire of everyone involved to be inclusive was also superb"

Participant Outcomes

Practical Skills Gained: Participants learned scriptwriting fundamentals, animation-specific writing techniques, and the importance of tools like an animation bible.

Networking and Industry Insights: Participants appreciated the exposure to animation professionals.

Career Advancements: Four participants successfully secured commissions for scripts on the Turnip + Duck 's series Maddie & Triggs. Additionally, two writers have since moved on to assistant script editor positions with another animation company, demonstrating the program’s impact on career progression within the industry.

The Numbers: What Participants Told Us

  • In the LISTEN HEAR group, the response was overwhelmingly positive, with 88.9% of participants rated the course as 'I really enjoyed it', with 11.1% selecting 'I quite liked the course.'
  • In the EVOLVE group, 100% of respondents said they enjoyed the programme, with glowing endorsements of its inclusivity and creativity.
  • LISTEN HEAR: 100% of participants reported feeling more confident in their skills as writers by the end of the course.
  • EVOLVE: Many expressed excitement about turning their new skills into tangible career opportunities.
  • Across both groups, 100% of participants expressed an interest in pursuing writing careers following the programme, with animation writing taking a central focus.

Lessons for the Industry

Participants made several recommendations for the creative industries to become more inclusive and accessible:

  • For our writing new talent, we supplemented teaching the scripting stages by supplying a glossary, FAQ and sample beat-sheet. Be aware everyone has different level of experience so clear information will help to demystify the creative industries for everyone to thrive with confidence.
  • Think-time as part of the structure can be of real help for people with any processing or communication delays. For example, circulating meeting details before hand so that attendees can come prepared, or for larger information sessions an optional Q&A call sometime after the session for people who think of questions after the event has taken place.
  • Offer hybrid working options for greater flexibility.
  • Ensure software and tools meet accessibility standards, especially in light of the European Accessibility Act (EAA).
  • Be aware of any need for disability / communication riders, and provide clear and consistent schedules / expectations to support engagement.
  • Create safe spaces where participants feel seen and heard. For example, establish clear guidelines for respectful communication, and spaces where participants can share experiences without judgment.

Final Thoughts

The overwhelmingly positive feedback has motivated us to expand on how we provide opportunities for underrepresented voices. We’re also committed to refining the structure of our courses based on participant input, ensuring future programmes are even more impactful.

As one participant aptly put it, "It was an incredibly positive and empowering experience I truly enjoyed it … I really I'm not sure I would have discovered how capable I am without having done this course"

Programmes like Flipping the Script are proof that change is possible when we actively listen, adapt, and create opportunities for all.

We are immensely grateful for the support of our funders, Skillnet Ireland through the Skills Connect scheme and Coimisiún na Meán , without whom this initiative would not have been possible. Their commitment to promoting inclusivity and innovation in the creative industries has been instrumental in making Flipping the Script a success.

Their backing has allowed us to provide meaningful opportunities for underrepresented voices and champion accessibility and diversity within animation and writing. We look forward to continuing this vital work and creating even more impactful programs in the future.
