Flipped classrooms 101: A comprehensive guide to getting it right!

NEP’s holistic learning framework has revolutionized the way academic institutions impart education. In fact, many schools have already started implementing practices and designing pedagogies that transform learning into a fun, integrated and inclusive experience for students.?

Today, there are multiple pedagogical approaches such as project-based learning, case-based instructions, art-integrated learning, etc. that schools are experimenting with to target learning objectives successfully. One such unique pedagogical approach that we will discuss in today's newsletter is the flipped classroom model.?

We go over the core components of the flipped classroom model, its benefits for schools and how it aligns with NEP’s key principles of holistic learning. Let’s dive right in!?

So, what’s the flipped classroom approach all about? Simply put, it is a type of blended learning where students are introduced to curricular content at home and they practice working on it through hands-on activities at school. Teachers will typically introduce learning content through online videos or pre-recorded lectures, which allows students to spend their time in the classroom engaging in active learning.?

But, what exactly does active learning mean in this context? Essentially, in the flipped classroom approach teachers focus on conducting activities like group discussions, quiz sessions, case studies or presentations, making classroom time a more experiential process for students. It encourages students to learn by thinking, discussing, investigating, creating and being active participants rather than as mere listeners in their academic journey.

This instructional model reverses the traditional learning experience. In a flipped classroom, students utilize their time by proactively engaging in discussions, collaborations and problem-solving activities. As we know, the new NEP reforms emphasize on developing a holistic learning experience that enhances the cognitive, social, emotional and creative capacities of students.?

Similarly, the flipped classroom approach empowers students to explore their individual learning styles, foster deeper engagement and develop higher-order skills - all of which align with the key objectives of NEP.?

How the flipped classroom method works

  • Pre-class learning: Video lectures, interactive tutorials, online readings at home?
  • Concept reinforcement: Discussions, problem-solving & hands-on activities in the classroom
  • Individualized support: Personalized guidance and support from teachers?
  • Collaborative learning: Group activities foster learning from diverse perspectives???

?It is key for schools to ensure a smooth adoption of this transformative pedagogical approach in an effort to embrace the future of education. Promoting inclusivity, diversity and engagement in education through flipped classrooms requires careful planning and execution.?

Benefits of flipped classrooms for schools

  • Enhances student engagement
  • Promotes differentiated instructions?
  • Fosters self-directed learning?
  • Supports holistic development?
  • Cost-effective implementation?

NEP’s overarching focus on holistic learning practices goes beyond just curriculum-based knowledge and focuses on the overall development of students. The flipped classroom model seamlessly ties this in by enabling teachers to create a learning environment that nurtures innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving.?

We hope this newsletter served as a guide to help you successfully integrate the flipped classroom model and foster optimal outcomes for your institution, its students and teachers!
