Flip Your Switch Back to ON!

As you’ll see in the conversation I had last week with hockey Hall of Famer Jeremy Roenick, the vast majority of athletes do not retire from their sport on their own terms. Jeremy was one of the lucky ones, but he still faced the challenges of how to leverage the skills he learned over his 21-year career into his life after sports.
One thing that I like to teach the athletes who I work with is that regaining that elite athlete mindset and confidence is like flipping a light switch. Once you see how you can translate your skill set and mindset into the business world, nothing can hold you back from hitting your next home run, scoring your next goal or making your next game-winning jump shot! The light is now shining bright again!
Athletes bring a unique and powerful set of skills to the business world, which is why they’re often so successful when they transition from the field, court, or rink into the boardroom. In Win Again, the playbook I wrote helping athletes on an easier path to their next great career, I ?highlight these traits, showing just how transferable the lessons learned in sports are to any business setting. As someone who’s spent time around athletes, I’ve seen firsthand how the same mindset that drives them to athletic success can be the key to thriving in business.
Discipline is one of the most essential skills that athletes develop, and it translates seamlessly into business. From an early age, athletes learn the value of sticking to a routine, showing up day after day to train, and pushing themselves even when they don’t feel like it. Whether it’s balancing early morning practices with school or preparing for a big game, athletes know that success doesn’t come overnight—it’s the result of consistent hard work.
In business, this same discipline is critical. Meeting deadlines, managing projects, and staying focused through the ups and downs require that same dedication to getting the job done.
Athletes are also uniquely equipped to handle pressure. In the heat of competition, when the game is on the line, there’s no room for panic. The ability to stay calm and make clear decisions under pressure is something athletes master. Whether you’re a quarterback in the last two minutes of a game or a golfer making a crucial putt, athletes learn to thrive in high-stakes situations.
In business, this ability to perform under pressure—whether in meetings, negotiations, or major presentations—is invaluable.
Another trait that athletes bring to the table is being goal-oriented. Athletes spend their careers chasing milestones—whether it’s a championship, a personal best, or a new skill. They know how to set a goal, work toward it with laser focus, and pivot when necessary.
This kind of focus is critical in business, where it’s easy to get distracted by shiny new ideas or unexpected challenges. Athletes understand that success is a process, and they’re willing to put in the work to see it through.
One of the most underrated skills that athletes develop is teamwork. No matter how good you are individually, success in sports often comes down to how well you can work with others. Athletes know how to communicate, trust their teammates, and push each other to be better.
These are the same qualities that make someone a great team member in a business setting. Being able to collaborate, contribute, and share the workload is crucial for achieving organizational goals.
Resilience is another trait that sets athletes apart. Athletes know how to bounce back from setbacks, whether it’s an injury, a loss, or a bad performance. In business, resilience is key to overcoming obstacles.
When things don’t go as planned—whether it’s a failed product launch or a downturn in sales—athletes have the mental toughness to keep pushing forward and adapt to the situation.
Finally, athletes understand leadership. Whether they’re leading by example or stepping into a more formal leadership role, athletes know how to inspire those around them. In sports, leadership often means setting the tone, motivating teammates, and staying focused on the end goal.
In business, those same leadership qualities can drive a team to achieve more than they thought possible.
When you look at all the skills athletes develop—discipline, handling pressure, goal-setting, teamwork, resilience, and leadership—it’s no wonder so many of them find success in business.
If you’re not an athlete yourself but you’re building a business, partnering with athletes can be a game-changing move. Their mindset, work ethic, and ability to overcome challenges will bring incredible value to your team and help take your business to the next level.
If you are / were an athlete and you'd like guidance towards that great next career, I will guide you towards a role in which you feel engaged, rewarded, fulfilled and excited to be doing! Don’t settle for what some random person wants you to do for them post-retirement.
You have the skills for a rewarding career after sports, and all you need is someone to guide you through those waters! Let’s talk!
Here's What You Missed - Jeremy Roenick in the Clubroom!
500+ goals. 700+ assists. And tough as nails! That earns you a ticket to the Hockey Hall of Fame!
But what earned Jeremy Roenick his ticket into the Win Again Clubroom for me is his focus on giving back to the fans.
I love hearing about that.
Tons of examples of his kindness, and it all came from an encounter with Gordie Howe when he was at a Whalers game as a child.
Throw in a bunch of great stories surrounding hockey, his time on TV, his new whiskey brand Whiskey in the Wild, and a few scraps along the way, and you can see w had an entertaining time in the Clubroom!
Give this one a watch, you'll be thrilled you did!

In both sports and business, failure is inevitable—but what matters most is how you bounce back.
Athletes know the feeling of dropping a crucial catch, missing a game-winning shot, or losing a hard-fought match. It stings, but they don’t stay down for long. They shake it off, analyze what went wrong, and put in the work to come back stronger.
Entrepreneurs face similar setbacks—missed opportunities, failed launches, or business deals that didn’t go as planned. It can feel like a dropped ball in the big game, but the mindset required to recover is the same. It's about resilience, learning from mistakes, and pushing forward with even more determination.
Just like an athlete doesn’t let one missed play define their career, an entrepreneur shouldn’t let a single failure define their journey. Each setback is a chance to regroup, refocus, and return to the game with a new strategy.
The path to success, whether on the field or in the boardroom, is never a straight line. It’s full of ups, downs, and unexpected turns. The key is to keep moving forward and treat every "dropped catch" as an opportunity to grow.
So, here’s to everyone who’s missed the mark but didn’t give up. Keep bouncing back, keep pushing forward, and remember—every setback is just setting you up for a stronger comeback.
