Flip things around today

Flip things around today

Old habits

Here's one: when you're preparing your next PowerPoint deck, you're probably typing dark type onto a light background. Of course you are! Years of reading books have taught us to do that.

But that's not the easiest way to read. White text on a dark background pops out - my friend Mark Bowden of TruthPlane points out that in movies and on the stage you're directed to look by where the light shines.

And if you'd like to stretch yourself...

Shine a light on other places where you might just be going for the old way of doing things. See what happens when you flip things around today.

This points up an interesting contrast between our perceptions and that of our audience/customers/employees/whoever: When we prepare our PowerPoint, we are working on it on a computer screen - a contained surface like a book - so our default assumption is that it should look like a book. When we present it, our audience is seeing it on a larger shared screen, so their default assumption is that it should look like a movie or a stage production. So maybe our tendency to create it using dark text on a light background is just symptomatic of our tendency to see only from our own perspective, when we would be much more successful if we looked at it from our audience's....
