Flip Flops and Career Tips: Insights from a Porch in South Africa

Flip Flops and Career Tips: Insights from a Porch in South Africa

My career is by no means the perfect example of how to do it.

Who’s is?

I’ve had my ups and downs. Victory laps. Epic fails. Incredible experiences. And challenges that made me get into bed and cry.

Who hasn't? ??

Earlier this month, I was in South Africa visiting my parents. Sitting on the porch, in flip flops, I thought about all the things that helped me take steps in my career.

I want to share my list with you today.

(ps. as you read through this, think about your own experience and what helped your career progression the most. Hit reply and tell me – I can also do with advice.)

?Questioning Norms

I have a hard time accepting norms and "the way things are." Pushing back on the status quo has helped me challenge expectations that don't make me happy. Is there something in your career or life where you can ask, "Does it really have to be this way?"

?Owning Your Strengths

It took me a while, but I realised how important it is to bring out our strengths. We focus too much on what we need to improve and forget about the great skills we already have. Your strengths are your magic. What are your strengths? Bring it out more!

?Always Be Learning

That said, there's always room to grow and learn new things. Being open to new ideas, skills and ways of working has been key to my career growth. Let's not get too comfortable or too old to learn new things. ??

?Building A Network (Strategically) and Staying Visible

I've not always been great at this: building a network and staying visible at work. Still learning actually. I can give you several examples where my career didn't move forward because I neglected these. Building your network, strategically and making sure you're seen will boost your career. Promise.

What would you add to my list? What has worked for you? Comment below and let me know!

Jeanette ??

ps. the photo is from me and my mom enjoying lunch and the view in the Kruger National Park.

People always ask us if we're sisters. Followed by their jaws dropping and eyes widening in deep shock when we say "Nope, mother and daughter". I try not to be offended. ??

I would add celebrate your "wins". Most often, we are trapped in a continuous strive for what's coming next that we don't pause and celebrate the wins along the way. So pause, celebrate and then get ready for what's coming next

I would add 'ruthless prioritization'. Doing things right is ok, but doing the right things is crucial. And: Focus! This is my learning. Thanks for the good question and your inspiration, dear Jeanette. :-)
