This week, Weekly Aligned's got a scoop on working from home and all the numbers behind it. I would like to begin this article by sharing my journey, starting from Nigeria in 2015, when I embarked on my remote work adventure. Back then, remote work wasn't as widespread as it is today, and the concept of flexible work culture was just beginning to take root.

Back in those days, I found myself in the vibrant city of Lagos, Nigeria, eager to contribute my skills and make a living. It was a time of uncertainty and exploration. I started working with a multi-national company, not knowing that this experience would eventually shape my perspective on work, life, and well-being.

The Flexibility that Changed Everything

Fast forward to 2023, and the world has changed dramatically. Remote work had become more than a trend; it had become a necessity. Just like the rest of the world, my journey took an unexpected turn due to the pandemic. Suddenly, companies that had never considered remote work were forced to embrace it. The very nature of work was shifting, and flexibility became the name of the game.

What surprised me the most was how this shift aligned perfectly with my values. The flexibility of remote work allowed me to weave work seamlessly into the fabric of my life. It wasn't just about the absence of a daily commute, but the freedom to structure my day in a way that suited me best. I could start my morning with a jog, share breakfast with my family, and still be as productive as ever.

Numbers Speak: The Rise of Remote Work

Speaking of productivity, let's take a look at some fascinating statistics that shed light on the remote work phenomenon:

Remote work had already been on a steady rise, growing by a whopping 173 percent from 2005 to 2018. This wasn't just a pandemic-driven shift; it was a gradual change in the way we approached work.

More than half of global companies, around 56 percent, have embraced remote work in some form. Some were fully remote, while others adopted a hybrid model, blending in-office and remote work.

The pandemic acted as a catalyst, pushing a whopping 88 percent of global organizations to offer remote work options to their employees. The once unthinkable became the norm to ensure safety and well-being.

Before the pandemic, around 52 percent of people were already working remotely at least once a week, and 68 percent worked remotely once a month. This wasn't just a temporary arrangement; it had become a routine.

Companies embracing remote work experienced a 25 percent lower employee turnover rate. Employees valued the flexibility and balance that remote work brought to their lives.

Small companies had a knack for remote work, being twice as likely to hire remote employees. This shift wasn't just limited to giants; even smaller players were recognizing the benefits.

Surprisingly, even before the pandemic, 4.7 million people in the US were already working remotely, constituting 3.4 percent of the workforce. Remote work wasn't new; it was just gaining more attention.

The flexibility offered by remote work isn't just about avoiding a commute; it's about creating a lifestyle that nurtures both personal and professional growth.
