Fleet Safety And The Law
Routine, thorough vehicle inspections are an important part of maintaining a safe, reliable fleet.

Fleet Safety And The Law

Recently, a news story came out about a tire that had flown off a semi-truck as it was driving down a highway. The tire rolled across the median and struck another oncoming semi, killing the driver. Investigators discovered that loose lug nuts caused the tire to dislodge.

Pre- and Post-trip Vehicle Inspections

With that in mind, do you know the condition of your fleet of delivery transports, bobtails, service trucks, and other company vehicles? Do you require your drivers to do daily pre-trip, post-trip, and en-route inspections? How complete are those inspections? How long does it take to conduct each inspection? Qualified, trained drivers can perform the inspections correctly. Include your drivers-in-training in the inspection process to familiarize them with procedural requirements.

Inspections completed in 10 minutes or less are a red flag for any lawyer gathering evidence after an accident involving a commercial vehicle, especially if any injuries or even fatalities are involved.

?

Inspections are the Law?

Even though it can be a time-consuming task and even a nuisance to some individuals, these preventative measures of complete inspections far outweigh the alternative, avoiding possible lawsuits and steep penalties due to non-compliance with FMCSA federally required inspections.

?

Inspections will go much smoother if you use a detailed checklist. The list covers the entire service vehicle inspection, examining all portions comprehensively. For your convenience, Propane Resources offers vehicle safety inspection forms for purchase at www.Compliance4DOT.com. You can pay online and have them shipped to you. How well do you know your fleet??

All truck files should be up to date with the following items:

  • Owner’s name,
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN),
  • Make, model, and year of vehicle,
  • Tire size,
  • Fleet number (if applicable), and
  • Current and past maintenance schedules for vehicles.
