Flashing Lights School Bus Rules.
In Canada and USA, it is mandatory for every driver to?stop whenever approaching a stopped/halted school bus with its upper red lights flashing, regardless of the fact you are behind or approaching it from the front.
When approaching the school bus from the front, stop at a safe distance for children to get off the bus and cross the road in front of you.
If you are coming from behind the bus, stop at least 20?meters behind & don’t move until the bus moves or the lights have stopped flashing.
Every driver on the road must obey these laws, no matter how many lanes of traffic or what the posted speed limit is.
Always be prepared to stop for a school bus and not just during school hours – if at all you don’t, this would be considered a serious traffic violation.
If convicted in Ontario one can be fined $400 to $2,000 and receive six demerit points on first offence.?Second time offence within five years, the penalty is a fine of $1,000 to $4,000 and six demerit points. You could also go to jail for up to six months.
Furthermore, in the province of Ontario, school bus drivers and other witnesses can report vehicles that have illegally passed a school bus.

Please note and watch for school buses near all railway crossings. As all school buses must stop at all railway crossings; however, the upper red lights won’t flash at these stops.
