Flashback Saturday: Startups during the 1950'S

Dunkin' Donuts (1950)

In 1950, Bill Rosenberg opened the first Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant in Quincy, Massachusetts, with the goal to “make and serve the freshest, most delicious coffee and donuts quickly.” In 1955, the first Dunkin’ Donuts franchise opened within five years and serves more than 4 million people per day.

Holiday Inn (1953)

Holiday Inn is a British-owned American brand of hotels. It was inspired to build his own motel after being disappointed by poor quality and inconsistent roadside accommodation during a family road trip. It has grown to be one of the world's largest hotel chains, with 1,173 active hotels and over 214,000 bedrooms.

Hush Puppies (1958)

The Hush Puppies brand was founded in 1958 following extensive work by Wolverine. The footwear brand not only earned a load of fans, including Keith Richards. More than just comfortable shoes, the brand even won the 1995 Council of Fashion Designers of America award for the best accessory.

Pizza Hut (1958)

Brothers Dan and Frank Carney university brothers opened their first outlet by borrowing some amount of money at Wichita, Kansas. Six months of operation they managed to open the second outlet and within a year they had six restaurants. Pizza Hut has 18,431 restaurants worldwide as of December 31, 2018, making it the world's largest pizza chain in terms of locations.

Club Med (1950)

Club Med village was located on the Spanish island of Mallorca. Blitz had opened a low-priced summer colony of tents on the Spanish island of Majora. Gilbert supplied the tents, and in 1953 Blitz wooed him into a partnership. The company is primarily owned by Fosun Group and either wholly owns or operates over seventy all-inclusive resort villages in holiday locations around the world.
