F**king Hubs!!!

The title of this article took some considerable thought - is it too strong, or not strong enough. Anyhow, pondering some more - I decided that it was just right. Simply put ...

For the sake of education - I wish that awarding organisations, examiners and educational experts would stop putting f**king hubs into national qualifications.

They no longer exist, you cannot buy them for love nor money. They were on the way out over twenty years ago. Yet the frigging things still persist within education. It does not help that some well known telecommunication providers call their wireless access points hubs (which they are not).

Some say - what about teaching collision domains, well - that is a concept, that is described by how switches (yes multiport bridges) solved that issue. Alas, there are some out there that do not wish to move on and accept that technology changes.

I have even pointed out to Cisco NetAcad that the need for hubs in Packet Tracer is perpetuating legacy and maybe they should also think about removing these delightful anachronisms.

So - please, please - pllleaaasseeee STOP IT!

Teach about switching, teach about routing, teach wireless, cover how switching (as multiport bridges) solved the collision domain issue. But do not ever mention Hubs again.

Sadly - I know I am wasting my time writing this.

I would not have used "delightful"

A couple of years back, I became so passionate in my rant about Hubs, that a student had a “I ?? Hubs” personally made for me as a end of year thank you present. I have never sipped a coffee from that mug to this day in disgust… ??

I went through a BTEC level 3 exam paper today with students that had either a switch/hub in their exemplar answer….NO! I explained in no uncertain terms why we don’t use/ shouldn’t use hubs anymore! So damn annoying! ??

Some area of where I work still use HUBS, so yes, they are taught about them and the security implications resulting in the use.

Hmm, yeah the use of hubs grind my gears too, but nowhere as much as IPv4 Classful Addressing and Subnetting - seeing that takes all my willpower not to commit serious violent crimes against those still perpetuating such utter nonsense! ??
