Fixing the workforce shortage

Fixing the workforce shortage

The effects of Brexit on skills availability in the UK have well and truly kicked in. The FT recently reported that the UK workforce is facing a shortfall of 330,000 workers – because of the end of free labour movement with the EU. In particular, these shortages have hit lower-skilled sectors, including logistics, construction and hospitality.? However, there are 500,000 people in the UK who have disappeared from the workforce since the pandemic. Enticing them back into the skills market may well help!

The numbers are powerful, but they’re not surprising. My company delivers on-demand support for internal hiring teams. That means I see, day-in, day-out, just how many companies are struggling to recruit to roles. And those are positions that in previous years would have seen candidates clamouring and given employers the chance to pick and choose.?

Companies will need to wait for any political solutions regarding opening the UK’s borders to talent from abroad.?But there’s also a lot that employers can focus on to up their game and significantly increase their chances hiring the workforce they need. Over 500,000 workers left employment post-pandemic and never came back. Many re-assessed their priorities, stopped putting up with bad employers, and put their health and stress levels above the 9-5.

There are people out there, either actively looking for work or ready to be enticed back. And few of us are immune to the cost of living crisis.

There are a lot of potential employees out there who, with a bit of tempting and some well-thought through employment proposals, could help to redress the balance. Think hybrid working, part-time working and if your organisation has a social mission, promoting it to candidates. There’s lots of data out there showing that these factors are top of jobseekers’ lists.

And needless to say, the support of a great recruitment team, is invaluable. Especially one that can cater to the inevitable ebbs and flows of our ever-changing and increasingly-unpredictable world.
